Match Report - Ealing 55 Chinnor 7

John Vaughan13 Oct - 15:15

Chinnor battle hard against a hugely impressive Ealing Trailfinders

Chinnor knew they would be facing an extremely stern test away against Champions Ealing on Saturday and and although they battled hard and managed to put the home side under pressure on occasions Ealing proved just too clinical on the day.

A tough task did not get any easier when Ealing scored directly from the kick off when a tap back bounced kindly into the arms of the impressive captain Conor Oliver. He took the fortunate bounce in his stride and after barely 5 seconds Chinnor were already 7 points down. This quickly became 12 when after some good maul defence from Chinnor Ealing managed to release Tom Collins.

Chinnor managed to exert some pressure after some excellent work from Grant Hughes who surged towards the line, after quick ball his fellow winger Ryan Crowley just couldn't control the loose ball for a try. Chinnor knew they couldn't afford to miss out on any chances as Ealing immediately showed their clinical finishing edge with tries from Hampson and Buckley and a cruel intercept from the strong running Hatherall gave Ealing a commanding 31-0 half time lead.

Chinnor emptied the bench early after conceding another quick try. The bench had an immediate impact as Chinnor enjoyed their best period of the match . Chinnor mounted some good attacks and a break from James Bourton made big yardage, Callum Pascoe was on hand to break from the ensuing ruck and scoot in under the posts. Chinnor continued to show tremendous spirit and had several more chances to score , a huge Freddie Ousley break from deep couldn't be finished off. Nick Smith chipped and chased and was within 2 metres before he was dragged down in a desperate last ditch tackle, again the ball was knocked on in the act of scoring to deny a deserved second try.

Montgomery made Chinnor pay with a superb score from broken field and Chinnor old boy George Shaw rubbed salt into the wound when he peeled off a maul to score.

Chinnor's brave efforts were summed up in the last few minutes when another Bourton break looked like ending in a score, however the loose scoring pass was swept up by Tobi Wilson and with Chinnor in all attack mode it looked like he was to score from the breakaway. A lung busting effort from Cam Rafferty foiled the counter with a superb try saving tackle.

There's no doubt Ealing look even stronger than last year , their embarrassment of riches in the back row and back three give them so many scoring options it becomes very difficult to plug the gaps. Chinnor will take some well deserved positives from their performance but again redzone efficiency and lapses in concentration are heavily punished in the Champ.
