Finks vs Storm Ciaran - there was only ever going to be one winner

Nick Stainton3 Nov 2023 - 16:00

A 223 mile walk and cycle in memory of Tom Wood, 10 years past.

A fitting tribute to Tom Wood by his close friend Paul Fincken, ex Captain and Club Chairman, who took on Storm Ciaran and won.

This will not be a surprise to anyone who knows Paul. To mark 10 years since Tom’s passing Finks hatched a plan to navigate around all the clubs in the Bucks/Berks/Oxon league which our mighty 2s won in 2005/6 , captained that year by Woody.
What an amazing tribute.

With meticulous planning that included 6 days of a walk/cycle odyssey.

Day 1 cycle off-road - CRFC to Olney and then on to the Cock Inn at Wing 65 miles.
Day 2 walk Wing to ARFC and then on to the Chequers Tree at Prestwood 23 miles.
Day 3 walk - Prestwood to Marlow RFC and then on to Maidenhead RFC 22 miles.
Day 4 cycle MRFC to Windsor RFC then Abbey RFC and then onto the Dog House at Frilford 65 miles.
Day 5 Walk Frilford to Witney RFC then on to Evenlode Eynsham 23 miles.
Day 6 walk Eynsham to Quinn’s then back to CRFC 25 miles 52000 steps as photo!

All routes off road to try to avoid main roads wherever possible.

Finks wasn’t without support, with Coulon Senior joining for part of day one on the bike, super Simmo doing some hard yards Wing to ARFC in the pouring rain! Coulon back for more joined by Tillion for part of the day 3 walk. All were on the infamous Cork tour. Say no more.

Big thank you to Trudi and Jen for all their support, pre/during/post adventure. Much appreciated.

The Vets welcomed him home and then basked in Finks’ superhuman efforts and achievements, not for the first time it must be said, with a few celebratory beers at the club and a curry. Regaling stories of yesteryear and Woody’s antics and love of Pol Roger champagne. Just what was required after 52,000 steps.

An incredible achievement and tribute to Tom Wood from an incredible person and member of Chinnor Rugby Club. Leading the way Mr Fincken. Congratulations.

Finks & Woody 1 - Storm Ciaran Nil.
