CHINNOR colt Luke Wills heads to Twickenham today as a reward for a testing season.
The 15-year-old suffered three serious injuries between October 2018 and January 2019, but his enthusiasm for the sport never wavered.
And such is the impression he made on those around him that Luke was nominated for a National Rugby Award by London Irish Academy.
The Lord Williams's School pupil has been shortlisted for The ‘Underdog Story’ accolade and will be stepping out at HQ this afternoon wearing his Chinnor club tie.
“It hasn’t sunk in properly yet,” said Luke.
“I would like to go along for a laugh and enjoy the day, but it will be a bonus if I win.”
Luke plays on the wing and has been with Chinnor from the U6 age group.
His injury-plagued season began in October last year when he dislodged four ribs.
The teenager, from Aston Rowant, then suffered a buckle break to the wrist in December, but on his return to action in January the Berkshire county back fractured his hip in a ruck.
Did that stop him for the rest of the season?
No. Luke was back playing just six weeks later.
“The hip injury was a lot of pain,” he said.
“It needed time, which I didn’t really give it.
“I just wanted to play rugby even though I was hurting and the doctor said I needed six months rest, but I didn’t listen.
“It was six weeks to the day that I had my next match for the county and it hurt to play.
“I only played half the game because the coaches didn’t want me to overdo it.
“It still hasn’t healed, I can still feel it now.”
The National Rugby Awards recognise all who contribute in so many ways to the sport, with former England captain Chris Robshaw an ambassador of the event.
