Girls Summer Training Proves A Success!

Our girls squad enjoy weekly summer pre-season sessions

CHINNOR RFC Thame’s girls squad have continued their summer training ahead of the new season.

Meeting once a week since the start of June, the girls have been treated to a variety of sessions, including rugby fitness, S&C, yoga, HIIT and spin classes.

Despite holidays and individuals isolating, numbers have still averaged between 20-30 across our U13, U15 and U18 squads, with the players all enjoying the variety on offer.

Organised by Girls Team Administrator, Lisa Fincken and Club Coaching Co-ordinator, Alex Bond, they were able to use their friends and local contacts to organise sessions.

“Summer training has really been a great success,” said Lisa. “And with a record 31 girls earlier this month and ten new players having joined the sessions throughout, it’s definitely something we will do again next year.

“We had more than 20 girls booked on to our last summer session last night which was spin and then we are back into pre-season from August 18 where we will start to add the Sunday training.

“Alex and I have been absolutely delighted that so many have continued to join in throughout the summer.

“With the success of the Women & Girls Touch Tournament in July and with our pre-season ending with our big Women & Girls event on August 28 with Marlie Packer, it’s looking like a great end to the summer.

“We also have a first tour in early-stage planning, a filled fixtures diary, another recruitment evening in September and numbers looking to reach 50 across the squad, so things are looking exciting for girls rugby at Chinnor.”

Pre-season started with a strength and conditioning session led by Abi Woodliffe-Thomas who is an instructor for Fleet Fitness in Aylesbury, and a Fit4Life indoor cycling class at Thame Leisure Centre with Emma Keys of EK Coaching.

Laura Avery, from LauraYoga Thame, followed on by taking the girls through a fun outdoor yoga flow and Vicky Harman, an instructor at BML Personal Training in Wendover, also put the girls through their paces with a HIIT session.

Lisa added: “I am lucky enough to have friends who are also qualified instructors, so I decided to reach out to them to see if they would help.

“They not only jumped at the chance to come and lead a session with the squad, but they all did it free of charge and in their own time which I thought was great.

“With the RFU recommending the activate program (injury preventing exercises) which is incorporated into the warm-up sessions and pre-match, and comprises of functional and core strength, balance and agility, it means we are already laying down the foundations of this and including it during our summer training ready for the pre-season.”

There is only 16 days to go until our Women & Girls Skills Coaching Session at Kingsey Road.

Taking place on Saturday, August 28, we have World Cup winner Marlie Packer visiting to talk about her rugby journey.

The day is a great opportunity for players to learn and hone their skills as well as meet a star of the women’s game. Open to newcomers and existing players from all clubs, please click HERE for more information and to book your place.
