Chinnor U16s prevail over Bicester
By Alex Bond
After a slow beginning, Chinnor play some good rugby to get the year off to a good start!
Bicester hosted the first game of 2019, on a cool but still day and a good crowd supporting the boys of both teams.
The second minute brought the first Chinnor attack, a strong Magnus P secured quick ball from a good break, fed to Chris B who then ran a jinking line from near halfway and put in a couple of dummies to produce the first try of the year for the Chinnor boys. Unfortunately the conversion was missed. 0-5
A little to much Christmas pudding seemed to slow both teams down for the next ten minutes, with missed tackles, handling errors and generally scrappy play. Bicester missed a kick to touch, Chinnor's clearance kick wasn’t chased down, Bicester's return caused a Chinnor knock on. Sloppy play all round. Bicester, then finally found touch with the kick, and won a penalty from the ensuing line out. A quick tap and go from 5 yards out from the line and Bicester rumbled over for a try, but also could not convert 5-5.
A flurry of substitutions from Chinnor after 15 minutes, the boys were caught cold by a clever, Bicester kick over the top. A great foot race ensued, just won by the Bicester winger who fed back the ball back well, for his teammates to storm over for a try in the corner, followed by a brilliant touchline conversion 12-5.
This passage of play seemed to wake Chinnor from their New Year slumber and produced some good quick rugby, only to knock on 10 yards short of the try line. Bicester's kick clearance kick again missed touch again which gave Rosco P the chance to spring a quick attack. He was stopped in his tracks by some good defence and spilt the ball in the tackle.
A little later, a strong scrum from Sam G, Ben N and Shaun B, caused a panic kick from Bicester's fullback, but this time he made touch on the halfway line. From the line out, Rich B, rising like a salmon fed Dan M who’s incisive break and quick team hands worked the ball wide to Max B, who fed Ben M for a well worked uncoverted try. 10-12.
The restart kick was straight down Gus B's throat and he set off on a powerful run, ably supported by Joe H. It was looking good with the ball spun out wide to the wing, but some dangerous play resulted in a yellow card for Chinnor reducing them to 14 men. Bicester, with the extra man, built up a head of steam with some good hands and aggressive play and, helped by a couple of missed tackles, they scored an easy try which they converted. 19-10 going into half time.
The second half saw Max B at scrum half, Ed M encouraging the team to up their game and Will V playing some clever rugby. An accurate kick to the corner found touch and from an intercepted line out, the combination of Moody and Bond notched up another try in the corner. 19-15.
A knock on from kick off gave Bicester a scrum in a good position but the Chinnor front line were working well together and won the scrum against the head. A clever, imaginative kick and chase by Eddie C forced the Bicester fullback into touch and from resulting line out Chinnor again played some lovely rugby only to be let down by another knock on. This gave Bicester the chance to relieve the pressure with a good kick down field.
Then the supporters were given a demonstration of how to play simple, effective rugby. From a Chinnor line out, with great hands, the ball was worked out wide through nearly ten sets of hands to Eddie C, who with pace and power scored in the corner. Well converted by Will V. 19-22.
Bicester's tactic was now to kick long from the kick off, but this did not serve them well as the ball landed in Max M's arms. He made a strong run out of defence and with some great support from Ben M and Rosco P forced the hosts all the way back onto their own try line. Bicester tried to kick clear, only to be charged down by Rich B. The resulting scrum to Chinnor gave Archie D the chance to pick and go, powering over right under the posts for a converted try. 19-29.
The restart gave "wrecking ball" Harry R the chance to show his power. He carried out of defence and fed Eddie C who had another powerful, pacy run down the wing was finally stopped on the Bicester 22 yard line. Their defence was sound and the rucked the visitors off the ball and kicked to clear their lines. This time for Finn S to run the ball back through the defence and then spin it out for Magnus P to score under the posts. This was duly converted. 19-36.
With only minutes on the clock, a marauding Ben M went on a 50 yard run, twisting one way, spinning the other, unfortunately knocking on and robbing himself of a certain try. Bicester then put together some consistent strong play and making good yards, only to be stopped in their tracks by a great tackle by Ed M and another steal from Harry R, this gave time for Will V to again kick cleverly for the corner, chased down and fed through the Chinnor hands with speed and accuracy ending with Dan M diving over for the final try of a good game of rugby 19-41.
