Having eventually tackled the weekend traffic we rock up for our first game for a while with all the team eager to play in style and give Joe Winpenny the performance in his final game.
Chinnor started positively with good physicality and line speed, with the mounting pressure leading to errors and knock ons from the opposition. It is on 8 minutes Chinnor score their first try, a quick tap penalty on the edge of the 22metre line, spreading the ball wide for Harry Bomber Hillier sliding into the corner.
Chinnor should have controlled the game from now on, however a high penalty count around the break down area kept London Cornish in the game with 2 penalty kicks converted well and taking the lead 6-5. On 20 minutes Chinnor are awarded a penalty and a positive decision to attack the Cornish with a 5 metre line out. We win possession have a couple of phases with the forwards, the ball is spread through the backs for Matt Mountfield to score in the corner, 6-10.
The game is now becoming disjointed with high penalty count from both sides disrupting continuity and flow. Again Cornish are still in the game and are unfortunate not to add to their tally as a penalty hits the upright. A few minutes later they do convert another penalty 9-10. Chinnor regroup and increase their advantage on 33 mins, another penalty sent into the corner by James Cathcart, from the line out the forwards decide to catch and drive and who is at the back ……. you guessed it Joe Winpenny drops down to score for the biggest cheer of the day embraced by all his team mates !!! Conversion slotted 9-17 to Chinnor. Cornish kick off, Chinnor receive the ball through some phases of possession, a little kick over the top by Matt Mountfield, is picked up by George Grose who releases Martin Nutt to score 9-22.
The second half was not the spectacle we were all hoping for, the game became very stop/start too many penalties from both sides and on another day the referee could and should have sinned binned players. Chinnor do however score On 55 min as George Grose slides in showing good strength as he brushes off the tackler to score in the corner 9-27. Cornish still show fine spirit and score from a mistake from under the high ball. They take advantage being played and pounce on a loose bouncing ball, some quick phases and score 14-27. Chinnor finish the game with 14 men following a high tackle and defend the line well to ensure Cornish do not score and produce a late fight back. Overall a good win, which with better discipline and game management of the referee should have been a more convincing one.
Mare of the match is Guy Hacksaw.
For his seal impression under the high ball.
Comment of the match is George Grose
Tackling opposition just out of play replying to the referee , "Just making doubly sure he was out sir “
Man of the Match Joe Winpenny .
The guy plays with passion gave 110% to black and white ,he twisted his ankle early on, any normal day would been replaced but continued throughout the game with pain. Limping, hopping across the field , scores a text book try off the line out ,clashes heads with Sam Blewitt leaving a gash in the side of head and then finishes with emotion ,tears and reality that this was his last game for the black and white, a loyal servant to our club for the last 15 plus years. Good luck on your next adventure and remember where your home is.
