Chinnor Seconds played their third home league game of the season against another big name, London team Esher. Their first team is at the top of national 1.
Chinnor knew this was going to be a challenge against such a big London club. There is no bigger test for any county club team, when a team comes from within the M25 to play on home turf. And you can be rest assured that the city boys do not want to loose against a village team. The moment that the two teams ran onto the pitch you could feel the atmosphere. The game was played between two very good teams at full strength with no quarter given. When Chinnor ran onto the field you could feel that this was a team up for a tough game, and were out to prove them selves, which they proudly did!
Both teams played well with Chinnor appearing to be the more organised side despite Esher giving as good as they got and it was only in the 15th minute before Chinnor got the well deserved try by Darren Oxley, converted by Sean Cunningham. It was a long wait before the next points came when Cunningham cut through the Esher boys for a well worked try which he also converted and the first half finished with Chinnor in the lead 14 points to nil. Both forwards and backs worked well together.
The second half started with the Chinnor forwards dominating at all set pieces as they did in the first half. Once again most of the game was played between the two twenty two meter lines exhibiting some real physical rugby from both sides. Chinnor had one player retire hurt to about six of Esher’s. It was just as well that they had six replacements.
Fifteen minutes into the second half Chinnor increased their lead with a well-worked try by Max Williams and well supported by the forwards. Ten minutes later it was the backs turn with the ball going along the full line and Harry Hillier finished it off with a try in the corner. Chinnor were now in the lead by 24 points to nil. Esher never gave up and it was only great defence by the whole Chinnor team that keep them out.
Esher got their only points with a penalty, and Chinnor hit back with another converted try by Darren Oxley who has a real influence when he plays for the team. The final score was 31 points to 3 in Chinnor’s favour. All 18 players had very good games with Tom Blampied, Max Williams and Darren Oxley excelling. The Seconds home league results are fantastic 37 to 17, 30 to 3 and 31 to 3 but have to work on away games, where scores are less favourable.
With a number of Chinnor players back from injury and others due to return bodes well for the whole club as long as we can keep injuries down to a minimum.
