Match Report Chinnor seconds vs Barnes seconds
29th November 2010
Chinnor seconds travelled to Barnes RFC on Saturday to play another top team in the Rugbyteck Shield Division 2 league
Due to injuries, non-available and first team we were only able field 15 players for this fixture and against such a physical team all the boys knew they had to stand up and be counted and that they did! Barnes started at a very intense pace and put Chinnor under a lot of pressure, and scored a try within 5 minutes, Chinnor pulled back 5 minutes later with a successful penalty by Sam Angell. Chinnor were then very unlucky to lose the talented young Ralph Jones with a very worrying shoulder injury (hope he recovers quickly). The teams were very evenly matched with the tackles coming in fast and furiously and with no quarter given or taken. With Ralph Jones going off coach Darren Oxley had to play for the first time in 2 years. (Well done Darren!) Although Barnes had the bigger pack the Chinnor pack started to play like only they can, with driving maul after driving maul with Barnes having no answer to them. Chinnor were rewarded with a very well taken try by Ed Rixon and converted by Angell. Chinnor were in the lead by 10 points to 5. Two kickable penalties went begging with one hitting the post, but Chinnor were able to keep Barnes under a lot of pressure, and despite Barnes constantly coming back time and again. Chinnor then laid siege to the Barnes try line and then sent the ball wide with Angle selling a dummy and scoring under the posts for a well worked team effort. The first half finished 17 points to 5 in Chinnor favour.
The second half started with Jones willing to go back on to play but had to come off the first time he made contact with the ball. Barnes started to come back at Chinnor and both teams played great rugby. This time Barnes had the breaks and ran in 2 tries, one converted and the points difference was cut down to 2 Chinnor leading 17 points to15.
An unfortunate incident took place while Chinnor were talking to the Ref about the penalty he had given Barnes and they took a ‘quick penalty’ which resulted in them scoring without a Chinnor hand being anywhere within reach and the Ref awarded the try much to the annoyance of the team. This appeared to fire up the Boys and the pack started a rolling maul in their own half and drove Barnes all the way back to their own try line. Simon Matthews scored with about six players clinging to him. The try was converted by Angell and Chinnor had retaken the lead by 24 points to 20. Chinnor managed to keep control of the ball and Barnes found it impossible to play without the ball.
Man of the match was Ricky Hopwood who would be in any National 3 First Team and is outstanding any time he plays for the seconds.
