Chinnor seconds travelled to Newbury for the start of the league, which they hope, will be as successful as last year, having finished in 2nd place.
Newbury being new to this league we felt it was an unknown quantity, but their 1st team is in Division 2 so a challenge was anticipated.
Newbury RFC started off the stronger putting Chinnor under a lot of pressure, using their big players to get over the advantage line. However the Chinnor defence held up well and with James Cathcart’s boot driving Newbury back time after time with some well placed kicks. Chinnor were first to get points on the board with a successful penalty by James Cathcart after 15 minutes of play, and a few minutes later Newbury evened the score with a penalty of their own.
Chinnor’s forwards then started dominating the game and the back line started to gel with all the set plays putting Chinnor on the front foot. Chinnor’s first try came Eric Brown who broke through the centre and scored under the posts, this was converted by Cathcart to take a 10 points to 3 lead. Chinnor continued to control the game and ran in a succession of tries by Andy berry, Huw Morgan and Baz Corpe and the first half finished 27 points to 3 in Chinnor’s favour.
The first 20 minutes of the second half was a replay of the first half, with Eric Brown getting his second try this time converted by Sam Angell. Newbury then scored an unconverted try and the score was 32 points to 8in Chinnor favour.
The following twenty minutes Chinnor went into overdrive running in seven tries by Brendan Davis, Sam Ludgate, Alex Woodhouse another by Andy Berry and 3 more by Baz Corpe and another seven conversions made by Cathcart 5 and Angell 4. The final score was Chinnor Seconds 81 points Newbury 8.
Man of the match was Baz Corpe, which cost him dearly on the way home.
This was a very polished performance by all twenty-two players, and with six first 1st team squad members being available being next week. Selection is going to be a nightmare with lots of disappointments so you better come to practice. The thirds beat Reading’s seconds by 79 points to 26 so it looks like Chinnor are in great shape for the coming season. Long may it last.
