Chinnor Seconds started the season off with a friendly against Beckenham 1st fifteen.
The game started off well for the Chinnor side with most of the play in the Beckenham 22 metres, but they were unable to put points on the board, and it was Beckenham that scored the first points with a penalty in the 15th minute. A try followed through a missed tackle and Beckenham finished the first quarter 8 points to nil ahead although the Chinnor forwards had dominated the forward play.
The second quarter was a replay of the first but this time Beckenham added another 2 tries and a conversion with Chinnor not being able to take advantage of time spent in the opposition half. The Beckenham flyhalf made the most of the wind that was at their backs for the first two quarters of the game and the Chinnor back line were unable to close them down. This is something that they will have to do if they are to hold their own in the league. The second quarter finished 20 points to nil in the favour of Beckenham.
It wasn’t until the third quarter that Chinnor added the first points with a well worked try by Harry Hillier, converted by Sam Angle and then three more points followed with a penalty by Sam. This quarter finished 20 points to 10 in Beckenham’s favour. During this quarter Chinnor started to take control of the play more and more and had Beckenham on the back foot for most of the quarter.
The fourth quarter started with another successful penalty by Angel and Chinnor was camped in the Beckenham 22, unfortunately handling errors prevented them adding points. Shortly after a break away in their own half saw them run the length of the pitch and they scored a converted try against the run of play. Beckenham won the game 27points to 13.
There were some positives from the game, the Chinnor pack is as good as usual, but the backs have to do a lot of work on their attack and defence play. However with the first team having four players away this week and also an extra six on the bench the season bodes well for the club.
Man of the match Edd Vickers followed closely by Harry Hillier who had a good game playing out of position.
Try: Harry Hillier
