Chinnor 2nd XV welcomed Barnes RFC to Kingsey Road for a friendly. And per usual another tough game against quality opposition was the order of the day. This week we had a number of players from key positions missing and had to play a number of forwards in the back line.
Chinnor started well but were unable to convert anything into points which was a little disappointing, but in all fairness the Barnes defence was outstanding. Both teams gave their all which made it a tough one. It took until the 30th minute before the first points were registered by way of a try by Barnes against the run of play and just on half time. Harry Hillier closed the gap with a penalty and the half finished 5 points to 3 to the visitors.
The first ten minutes of the second half both teams had successful penalties and Chinnor missed a number of opportunities to take the lead, including a kickable penalty during a spate of white line fever. This ended up as a turnover ball and a long kick down field, Barnes won the foot race and increased their lead to 15 points to 6.
An infringement by Chinnor gave Barnes another 3 points and Chinnor were chasing the game. The try of the game followed when Nick Harrison picked the ball up and outpaced his opposition with a loping run breaking a number of tackles and passed to Harry Hillier who then raced to the line who in turn again passed back to Harrison who scored and Harry Hillier converted. Chinnor were back in the game with only a 7 point gap 18 points to 11. In the final minutes of the game Chinnor had a number of opportunities to draw the game, but again relapsed with a bit of white line blindness which did not help.
This game was a great friendly for both teams with both enjoying the positive’s from the game; Barnes were most appreciative for the game.
This was a good performance by Chinnor with some outstanding individual performances as well; Sam Portland, Nick Harrison to name a couple, but Man of the Match this week goes to Mr "Reliable" Max Williams. It was also fantastic to see the 1st XV come over to watch the game when their game finished.
This week coming we play Blackheath Heathens at home in a league fixture.
