Chinnor Seconds Match Report for 31st March2012
Chinnor Seconds vs. Basingstoke Seconds
Chinnor seconds travelled to Basingstoke to play a friendly against their second team because Westcombe Park were unable to field a team to play Chinnor. With the seconds playing in the final of the Oxfordshire Cup against Henley next week it was imperative that Chinnor play a good team for the necessary match practice. They were very lucky that Basingstoke were able to play even though it was away from home. Basingstoke play in the Hampshire Senior 2nd XV Merit Division and are in second place with Bournemouth seconds in top spot.
It was a very competitive game from the start with both teams attacking and defending well. Chinnor took the lead in the 6th minute with a penalty by Jack Green. Chinnor then broke the deadlock just on twenty minutes with a powerful run by Ed Vickers fending off three players and scored in the corner. Two minutes later Trevor Powell side stepped the Basingstoke back line and ran forty metres and scored under the posts while all his team mates cheered him on from the 10 metre line. both tries were converted by Jack Green. Chinnor then gained another 3 points with a successful penalty, and in a period of five minutes Chinnor gained a lead of 20 points to 0. Shortly after Ian Stock scored a try in the corner and increased Chinnor’s lead to 25 points to 0 and which is how the half ended. Both forwards and backs from both teams played well.
The second half started with Chinnor stepping up a gear and Basingstoke had to defend more than ever if they were to keep Chinnor at bay. It took just 15 minutes for Chinnor to score three tries, coming from Ricky Hopwood, Harry Hillier and Ben Hackshaw. Just one conversion being successful and Chinnor increased their lead to 42 points to 0. It has to be said that that Basingstoke kept their heads up and continued to play good rugby and kept it a very competitive game but the boys were just too good for them. It took Chinnor another fifteen minutes before Chinnor got the next points with Ricky Hopwood getting his second try, this increased the lead to 47 points to 0. Basingstoke continued to attack and were justly awarded their first points with a try in the last minute of the game, and the final score was 47 points to 5 to Chinnor. This was just the game we needed in preparation for next week’s Cup final. A The whole side played well again. The Man of the Match Ian Stock.
Another step up in next week game
What was so nice about this game was that Basingstoke were appreciative of us travelling down to play them and were gracious in defeat. Their supporters applauded both sides for good rugby even with their team coming off second best. It was an honour and privilege to play this club. They can honestly regard themselves as one of rugby's ambassadors and examples of great sportsmanship and know how to make their visitors feel welcome, Thank you!
