So what has our DOR got to say about the first month of the season.......??

Dear Members and Friends,

So the first month of league games has passed and the 1st XV have achieved 18 points out of a maximum 20; 4 wins from 4. The Falcons are also unbeaten having had 2 league walkovers (still winning the friendlies) and smashing the other 2 league games.

I have previously said much about the success of pre season both from a game and training perspective but equally creating a culture and environment that can help breed confidence and success. We have done a lot of tactical work both in video meetings and on the pitch, but with this we have not let up on fitness levels and I believe this is the fittest squad we have had at Chinnor.

First game in against The Wild Geese we looked understandably nervous and it wasn't until the final 15 minutes when we relaxed into the game and unleashed. Henley was the expected monumental battle which we controlled very well, but thereafter from a tactical stand point I believe we are starting to show our identity. It is also important for us that we play rugby for 60 minutes each game. Anyone who says teams play focused controlled structure for 80 minutes is lying, rugby is not that sport. Why do we all love it so much- because it’s as close to a Gladiatorial Arena of bone on bone where the mentally strong always overcome the most skilled. This is why if we can confidently stay tuned and focused for 60 minutes, it will take one very very good team to beat us.

What is our identity? We aim to be brutal in defence and clinical in attack. We don't over complicate structures as we back precision and hopefully you are starting to see that. A moment last Saturday that epitomises our beliefs; Danny Barnes smoking his opposite number, getting to his feet picking the ball up and scoring.

This is also key to the culture of the squad- self accountability. Don't wait for me or my coaching staff to raise an issue, put your hand up and fix it yourself.

Selection is a tough thing. There are many disappointed boys who keep knocking hard on the door, working hard on the training paddock, working hard for the Falcons.A prime example being young 18 year old Sam Miller getting a MOTM performance for the Falcons so last week I gave him his 1st XV debut and he did very well. Dave McKee is doing a great job and I look forward to both the review and Jon Lavin's handy camera work on a Sunday. For those of you in regular attendance of 1st XV matches you will also notice the front row every game thus far has rotated around...such good depth, keeping everyone focused.

This Saturday is the first big test for the Falcons at home to Redingesians who always have a strong 2nd XV. Then Thursday evening under lights versus Oxford University Greyhounds. Your support would be massively appreciated at these games.
So to round off. We are taking each game as it comes, not looking further than the next Saturday, but am I pleased?- of course I am. We have a special group of guys that Chinnor should be proud of, not just as rugby players but men. This is proven by the fact over 30 of my senior squad are attending the picnic ball this year-play hard and (occasionally) party hard!

Until next time

Matt
