Winslow 10 vs.
Chinnor 4th XV 36
Saturday 12th January 2008
Friendly
With the hallowed fields of
Kingsey Road under water this week, rife with Dolphins, Chinnor travelled to
the paddy fields of Winslow this week, certain of their porpoise following
wins in the last few weeks.
The whistle blew and Chinnor
watched as the ball disappeared in the dazzling winter sun. A changed
lineout including Rob “Roy” McLachlan returning from a long sabbatical, and
with Kieron “Village” Hall absent, his boots were filled by “Shoes” Halson.
In fact the complete cobbler range was available with both “Boots” Halson
and “Shoes” Halson taking to the field together for the first time. The man
responsible, Steve “The Cobbler” Halson, a major influence on the IV’s line
up and talent over the years, has supplied many a pivotal player for the
IV’s, would be proud of both pairs of footwear this week.
Chinnor opened the scoring; A
lineout in the Winslow half saw a driving maul formed by the influential
Richard “Jabba the” Hutt and Mike “Thunderclap Neuman. Assisted by John
“Half a“ Pound the maul gained yards until Winslow were forced into
conceding a penalty. A quick tap and pop by Johnny “Previn” Williams to Adam
“Chimping” Woodliffe, saw the Captain for the day go over for Chinnor. 0-5.
With firm defence from Chinnor,
Winslow kicked regularly. One such kick through from the half way line saw
Winslow backs chasing keenly. A mistimed kick by an anonymous Chinnor player
on the left wing gifted Winslow their first try in reply, 7-5. Still warming
up Chinnor conceded a penalty near their 10m line. The Winslow 10 who was in
form, kicked well to add 3 points, 10-5.
The tide of play ebbed and
flowed with Chinnor slowly gaining composure. Working their way well into
the opposition 22, Chinnor rucked then span the ball out left through Will
“Getya” Dickinson. The pass found Ben “Bashmi” Bishop who collected then
snaked back inside the defence to go over left of the posts, 10-12.
The half time whistle saw a
stern talk from Captain Gordon “Voldemort” Fennel. Unimpressed with the
performance from his first choice team, “Voldemort” voiced his displeasure.
This galvanised Chinnor and the difference was seen straight away. Forcing
Winslow into a penalty from quick, efficient rucking, “Bashmi” added 3
points for Chinnor, 10-15.
Further scores followed; a
breakdown just inside Winslow's half found the ball span out yet again.
Hands found “Bashmi” who cut through but was just caught. Offloading to Pete
“Shakespeare” McDermott, the elusive back brushed off tackles and pirouetted
until he was 5m out. The resulting ruck saw the ball recycled and Will
“Getya” Dickinson touch down under the posts. Further pressure saw a similar
move on the right. Again “Bashmi” ran right, drew his man then passed out to
allow “Shoes” Halson make his debut try for the IV’s.
With a comfortable cushion in
the score line, Chinnor made their last changes. On came “Voldemort” and Rob
“Scabbers” Hill who played his small part. The final whistle went to record
another win for Chinnor. A positive performance from many; Matt “Billy
Elliott” Locke returning from absence performing well, taking 2 scrums
against the head. “Shoes” Halson appeared to have found his feet on the
wing. Conspicuous by his absence, Rob “Andrew” Atkin on shopping duties for
more dummies to sell in the coming weeks.
Chinnor play at home on the 19th
in a tough league clash against Redingensians, and look forward to seeing
their loyal fans then.
