Chinnor 4th XV 8 vs. Reading 3rd XV 24
Saturday 22nd March 2008
Friendly

Chinnor IV’s entertained Reading III’s this week in a friendly fixture. The adjacent field played host to the Thame Country show, while the IV’s hosted similar country visitors. The day saw sunshine, followed by blustery winds followed by near horizontal sleet then sunshine again, which kept everybody on their toes.

With a few regulars on other duties, “Jabba” Lambing, “Mad” Mike in competition with Tesco’s, and “Sippy” Hughes shopping, a few new faces entered the fold. In at scrum half, the Chinnor legend Doug “I’m free” Humphries, Jack “Cockun” Bull in the center alongside Andy “Limpy” Ardron. Open side was filled by Ben “Colonel” Saunders, waiting in the wings Jack “Did you” Warner. Driving from the front, Dave “Fireball” Hanlon, Steve “Mrs” Bridges and back from sabbatical, Mike “Harry Potter” Bambrook.

Despite this all star line up, the cold weather did not allow the IV’s to gel as well as they might have. Fifteen minutes in they found themselves 2 scores adrift for no apparent reason. Rallying around Voldemort”, the IV’s eventually fired up the Quattro through Mark “Little” Cox. A neat cross field kick from Will “Getya” Dickinson bounced nicely for the attacking winger. The fourth team regular scooped up the ball, sprinted for the line and touched down left of the posts. Chinnor were spurred on and maintained their attack, minutes later they were awarded a penalty which was slotted over by “BishBashBosh” Bishop.

Chinnor kept working but sloppy defending let the visitors in again before half time for an unconverted try.The second half saw Guy “Junior” Hackshaw on for “I’m free” Humphries, and special guest star, Jamie “Madam Hooch” Dickinson on for “Little” Cox. The IV’s never let up but could not show any of the magic from previous weeks. It was not until near the end of the match that they finally saw through the big exhaust and shiny chrome of Readings Vauxhall Viva 1300, and put them under pressure. Up until then they had given the visitors too much respect. “Getya” Dickinson made some penetrating runs reminiscent of better days, but the IV’s could not capitalise.

A few more changes were made, off were “Voldemort” and “Shakespeare” for Craig “David” Smith and “Did you” Warner, to allow the two stalwarts to thaw out. Chinnor only conceded 7 points in the second half, but the damage was already done. A performance to build on certainly before their next league game against Newbury on the 29th.

Scorers:
Try: Mark "Little" Cox
Penalty: Ben "BishBashBosh" Bishop
