Newbury IV (Home)

Chinnor 4th XV 42 vs. Newbury 4th XV 0
Saturday 8th September 2007
Berks/Bucks & Oxon Division 2 South

Chinnor took to the hallowed, lush green pastures of Kingsey road to start their league campaign at home against Newbury IV this week. The high summer breeze from the nearby bypass and sewage works filled the air.

The game saw a slow, confident start from Chinnor. The first 20 minutes played in Newbury’s half before the floodgates opened. Newbury conceded a penalty following indiscipline during as maul just out side their 22. Ben “Bishbashbosh” Bishop lined up the kick and converted well to put Chinnor 3 points ahead.

The game ebbed and flowed, with possibly more ebb than flow. Newbury were unable to threaten seriously, Chinnor were confident but still showing signs of rust, as the half played out. The second half saw Chinnor lead 3-0.

Showing their determination, Chinnor cement their intention through a try from Tony “Arfur” Daley. A lineout just inside the Newbury 22, caught by Mike “Lady Penelope” Bambrook was off loaded to Gordon “Gordon” Fennell who ventured on, drew the Newbury fullback, passed to “Arfur” who then ran through last player to touch down in the corner.

The half time changes rung by “Gordon” were starting to tell. John “Yenohe” Can on for “Mad” Mike Neuman, along side Terry “And June” Chappell bolted the Chinnor pack to the ground. Chinnors second try came from a pressurised Newbury in their 22. A knock on resulted in a Chinnor scrum. The pack dug deep, cranked up the gears and drove on. With Jonny “Another” Williams calling the line, Dave “Thunderbird 2” picked and touched down for another 5 points.

Sensing the game was theirs Chinnor upped the tempo. A Newbury scrum near their 10 saw the ball pop out the back. Off like a rocket was blindside flanker, Rob “Roy” McLachlan, who kicked on between two defenders. Surprising them with his speed, “Roy” then kicked on a second time over the line to allow Kieron “Albert” Hall to touch down in the corner. Another scrum in the Newbury half saw the ball span out to the backs, good hands by Matt “Mr Tracy” Lock to Rupert “The Bear” Turnball found “BishBashBosh” in space to add more points.

A comeback after 12 months following a serious knee injury, Will “Virgil” Dickinson had stepped up to the no. 10 position, setting a game that saw plenty of action on both wings. Pete “Parker” McDermott showing hints of old form, and Kieron “Albert” Hall setting up tries for his fellow players.

With the symbiosis between the forwards and backs from last season starting to develop, this game was another invaluable outing for the team. Man of the match was closely contested between “BishBashBosh”, “Virgil” and Simon “Tina” Turner, while mare of the match was unanimously won by “Albert” for not following through on the pitch.

Chinnor IV’s continue their league campaign away to Wheatley next week.
