Chinnor 4th XV 14 vs. Harwell 2nd XV 17
Saturday 20th October 2007
Berks/Bucks & Oxon Division 2 South

The pure blue of an Indian summer sky formed the backdrop, as a new look Chinnor IV took to the hallowed fields of Kingsey road this week. The new look side put together because many regular faces were “still away on tour”.

From the kick off Chinnor found themselves in their own half defending for the first 10 minutes. Then finding their rhythm worked their way up field, as the formidable force of youth and experience started to gel. After 15 minutes Chinnor were unlucky to concede a penalty, which Harwell duly converted, 0-3. Unconcerned Chinnor came back and set about playing in Harwell’s half. A few Argentinean style kicks from Harwell were returned with interest, until collecting another kick, Pete “Shakespeare” McDermott ran around the pursuing attackers kicked deep, and with Mark “Hedwig” Cox in support forced Harwell to put the ball out inside their 22.

The resulting lineout saw Chinnor move closer, Harwell under pressure conceded a penalty. Dave “Lisa “ Goddard took a quick tap, sped to the line only to be held up at the last. The game continued, until against the run of play Harwell broke away just inside the Chinnor half, and with a few quick passes touched down near the posts. 0-10.

Still confident, the youth and experience in Chinnor started to gel more. Awarded a scrum on the Harwell 10, Chinnor fed the ball to Joe “Wilson” Pickett on the wing. “Wilson” cut back inside, and with a neat scissors movement popped to Alan “Higher” Purchase who ran the last meters to the line. “Malfoy” added the conversion, 7-10.

Much the quicker side, Chinnor were unable to capitalize on their advantage at times. Using their larger forwards, Harwell worked their way into the Chinnor 22, then slipping tackles their no.8 broke through, was grounded by “Shakespeare” but just reached for the line to touch down, 7-17.

Ringing the changes, skipper Gordon “Voldemort” Fennell readjusted the lineup. Following a blood injury to “Hedwig”, Sam “Getdown” Honour came on the wing, filling “Hedwig’s” boots admirably. And Rob “Roy” McLachlan came on for Boots “Sulley” Halson who had suffered a toe injury. Realising their advantage, Chinnor started to wake up and play some nice rugby. Harwell were awarded a scrum near halfway. Now playing at 12, “Wilson” nailed the Harwell 10 who knocked on, playing the advantage Jack “Cockand” Bull picked up the loose ball, dodged the Harwell 12, then stepped in side the fullback to touch down under the posts. 14-17.

Chinnor then played out the last few minutes with neat interplay and passing but could not add points. A good performance from a fresh team. Particular mention should go to Matt “Fielding and” Batting, Tom “Didyou” Warner, Luke “He’s not” Wellbelove, and “Potter”. For their hard work in what was for many their first outing with the IV’s.

Scorers:
Tries; Alan "Higher" Purchase, Jack "Cockand" Bull
Conversions: Will "Malfoy" Dickenson
