Harwell 2nd XV 0 vs. Chinnor 4th XV 34
Saturday 26th January 2008
League

With the crocuses newly in bloom, blowing in the wind, Chinnor found themselves in the shadow of the particle accelerator at Harwell this week.

A regular line up was boosted by 2 Chinnor stalwarts, in the form of Alan “Any” Beverage and Craig Dalziel “And Pascoe” in the backs. Lining up a full side this week had been  tortuous task for Gordon “Voldemort” Fennell and Mike “Sippy” Hughes, but when all seemed to be slipping away in the changing room, the team were galvanised by the sudden appearance of 4th team legend and part time patio expert, Terry “And June” Chappell. Cries of “We’re saved” rang around the room.

Chinnor started the first half playing into the persisting, blustery wind and low winter sun. Harwell kicked off from the whistle, and Chinnor secured well from Tony “Arfur” Daley assisted by John “Half a “ Pound. Working their way up field to play in Harwell’s half. Retaking possession, Harwell found themselves against stern Chinnor defence, the pressure told as Gavin “He’s not dead” Williams tackled, the ball spilled and Will “Still PDQ collected and ran around the defence to touch down, 0-5.

Harwell kept Chinnor busy with persistent kicks deep in their half. A series of scrums resulting from a kick to touch and subsequent lineout tested Chinnor on all fronts. Harwell appeared to have gone over, only to find the try held up by Adam “Chimping” Woodliffe, ever tenacious in defence. Chinnor finally cleared their lines through “Still PDQ” Dickinson.

With the Chinnor set piece working well on all fronts, the visiting side soon worked their way out of their own half. A breakdown saw the ball find Mike “Thunderclap” Neuman who span out to Alan “Any” Beverage who in turn gave quick ball to Craig Dalziel “And Pascoe”. A neat flick back to “Any” Beverage enabled the veteran centre to touch down to the right of the posts. 0-10. Chinnor were starting to really warm up now, and put together some nice passages of play to see out the half.

It was not until the second half that Chinnor found the white line in true Amy Whitehouse style. Boosted by the substitution of Terry “And June” Chappell for Rob “Roy” McLachlan after yet another sold performance. Chinnor, now with the wind at their backs put their foot down and found top gear.

A Chinnor lineout near the Harwell 22 saw the ball go long from Matt “Billy Elliot” Locke. Collecting the ball at the back, new face Aaron “No name” Taylor split the Harwell defence to touch down for his first try for Chinnor. “Still PDQ” added the conversion, 0-17. Making the most of the wind, Chinnor kept play in Harwell’s half. Recovering from just missing out on a try in front of his family, Johnny “Previn” Williams made no mistake from a scrum 10m out. The elusive scrum half stepped then dashed through to add another 5 points.

Repeated passing out of the tackle really worked well. Another such passage from “Arfur” Daley, “Previn” Williams and Andy “Not related” Healy found Terry “And June” Chappell with the ball yards from the line. Quick reaction saw the legend skip through for another try.

Chinnor’s last score came through “No name” Taylor. A pass out from a Chinnor turnover saw the new face hand off in the Harwell line then run wide to add another try. From what appeared to be a hard fixture, Chinnor really did come together and gel well. Good support all over the field from Andy “Not related” Healey. Taking lineouts from Harwell, Mike “Harry Potter” Bambrook proved invaluable. Kicking well from fullback, Pete “Shakespeare” McDermott played his usual solid game. “Arfur” Daley showed his nice hands frequently. “Still PDQ” organising and kicking well from 10.

Chinnor IV’s play at home to Basingstoke on the 2nd.

Scorers:
Tries: Will “Still PDQ” Dickinson, Johnny “Previn” Williams, Alan “Any” Beverage, Aaron “No Name” Taylor (2), Terry “and June” Chappell
