Abingdon 2nd XV
7 vs. Chinnor 4th XV 39
Saturday 10th November 2007
Berks/Bucks & Oxon Division 2 South
Chinnor IV’s travelled to
Abingdon this week to continue their league campaign. On a bright day with a
troublesome, blustery wind. A strong line up fielded by skipper, Gordon
“Voldemort” Fennell would test the home side.
Abingdon started well through
some strong rucking, and kept possession keeping Chinnor out of play to
start with. Then with some neat counter rucking Chinnor took possession
themselves and set about executing their game plan.
A scrum on the Abingdon 10m saw
the line span out by Will “Malfoy” Dickinson with a miss pass to
“BishBashBosh” Bishop, who in turn delivered a second miss pass to Mark
“Hedwig” Coxy on the wing. Mark “Hedwig” slipped a pass back inside to Gavin
“Arfur” Williams who handed off defenders to go over after 7 minutes for
Chinnor. 0-5.
Abingdon did not lie down and
came straight back. Working their way into the Chinnor half, they span the
ball left to their winger who cut back inside, went through the defence and
touched down under the posts. 7-5.
The Chinnor backs had sensed
their upper hand, but had to wait for the forwards to deliver again before
being able to capitalise. Another scrum on the Abingdon 22 saw the ball
hooked neatly by Mike “Sippy” Hughes, span out again by Johnny “Previn”
Williams to Rob “Andrew” Atkin at 10. Having been unable to sell any the
previous week, Rob “Andrew’ had a full basket of dummies this week and did
not hesitate to use them.
With support beckoning in the
shape of Gavin “Arfur” and Pete “Shakepeare” McDermott, Rob “Andrew”
executed a plethora of dummies to slice through the Abingdon line and touch
down. “BishBashBosh” added the conversion, 7-12.
Chinnor started to warm up in
the last part of the first half, with Gavin “Arfur” running in another try
to finish the half off. The second 40 minutes saw a few changes. After a
solid performance Rob “Mole” Hill was off, for Mike “I want that one”
Neuman, and Rupert “The Bear” Turnball on for Mark “Hedwig”.
Starting as they meant to go on,
the Chinnor forwards opted not to ruck but gain ground through quick
handling and support. Richard “Jabba the” Hutt, Adam “Fang” Woodliffe, John
“ Half a“ Pound and “Sippy” Hughes working well”.
Chinnor increased their lead
through Johnny “Previn” Williams making a break down the right side inside
Abingdon's 22. The forwards drove on then formed a ruck, Andy “Moaning
Mertyle” shipped the ball to Rupert “The Bear” who ran a straight line, gave
quick ball to Rob “Andrew” then again to “Moaning Mertyle” to Gavin “Arfur”
who ran over his opposite number to touch down again for Chinnor.
Abingdon were still keen to make
inroads on Chinnor's game, but were kept at bay, and in their own half by
Will “Malfoy” Dickinson kicking well. Chinnor in turn kept up the pressure.
The last 10 minutes saw another maul formed by “Voldemort” Fennell and
“Fang” Woodliffe. Ever ready, “Previn” Williams, with a swish of his baton,
burst through one tackle, side stepped and with a final hand off went over
in the corner.
A stout performance by Chinnor
overall. Mike “Harry Potter” Bambrook stealing well in the line out, and
Mike “Sippy” Hughes demonstrating good play in the set piece. Johnny
“Previn” Williams conducting play well from 9. A better defensive display,
but room for improvement in the coming weeks.
Scorers:
Tries: Gavin "Arfur" Williams (3), John "Previn" Williams (2),
Rob "Andrew" Atkin (2), Ben "BishBashBosh" Bishop
Conversions: Ben "BishBashBosh" Bishop (2)
