Weston Super Mare 1st XV 25
vs. Chinnor 1st XV 27
Saturday 8th September 2007
SW Division One
No easy task this for Chinnor. Away down
at Weston was a fixture they might wanted to have avoided first up on
their return to South West 1.
However they were both well prepared and up for the task as their
sprightly start indicated. Two penalty goals by James Cathcart gave them
an ideal start. Then pressure around the fringes of the Weston scrum by
Luke Harding, made for some sloppy passing which Chinnor seized upon.
They gained possession and a disorientated defence allowed Jaike Carter
in for a try. The resultant conversion and another penalty by Cathcart
increased the Chinnor lead to 13 points in as many minutes.
Weston struck back with two penalties
from Mark Armstrong with the game seesawing from end to end. A well
worked move from the middle of the park saw Harry Jackman pick up from
the base of a scrum with the ball reaching Ben Hewitt, who had come into
the line to go over. This was a move straight from the training ground.
Weston again hit back with a try from No.6 David Cook. Two massive
penalties, both from the half- way, by Cathcart gave Chinnor a 13 pt.
cushion at the interval.
Chinnor squandered two clear cut
opportunities to kill the game in the first quarter of the second half
allowing Weston back in the game. An exchange of penalties by Cathcart
and Armstrong still left the away side in the ascendancy but a tiring
Chinnor conceded two late tries to Cook and Reid which gave a score line
too close for comfort. Nevertheless Chinnor would most certai9nly have
settled for this result en route to the West Country.
