Chinnor 1st XV 30 vs. Reading 1st XV
Saturday 6th October 2007
SW Division One

A curate's egg of a performance this. Chinnor put together some slick passages of play but also allowed the game to drift at times. Maybe these coincided with the roars coming from the Clubhouse where England's destiny in the World Cup was being played out. However a five try to two count is not to be sneezed at and keeps Chinnor on a winning roll.

Chinnor started enterprisingly enough attacking from the word go, but it was Reading who were first on the score sheet, when Mark Bragg intercepted a pass meant for Jaike Carter and ran 80 metres to touch down. Chinnor were soon back in the hunt when Grizz McQuire went over from a rolling maul Craig Burrows then scored the first of his three tries, from a forward drive and Chinnor were in the lead after 18 minutes of play. With Ben Hewitt leaving his kicking boots at home, missing two fairly easy conversions and a couple of penalties and Chinnor taking their foot off the gas, the second quarter was a lack lustre affair with neither side making any positive headway.

With England now home and dry and the noise from the touchline several decibels higher , Chinnor responded accordingly. In the 48th minute they scored a fine try when Owen Gustafson switched the direction of play, allowing Richard Williams to outpace the covering defence and go over. Next up came an "out of the blue "left footed drop kick from Trevor Powell that wobbled over for three points. Duncan Mollinson then reduced the deficit for Reading with a fine individual effort. With Craig Burrows up in support to score from another break by Williams, and then add his third try from a rolling maul, Chinnor were in the ascendancy, particularly as Ben Hewitt finally found his kicking touch to convert the last try.

There are now testing times ahead for Chinnor, as they play Redingensians, Bracknell, Maidenhead and Cleve all in  the space of 4 weeks. However with 5 wins on the bounce, and three of these on the road then they should be looking forward to this with some anticipation.
