Old Patesians 1st XV 11 vs.
Chinnor 1st XV 16
Saturday 29th September 2007
SW Division One
Chinnor made hard work of their 16-11
victory away at Old Patesians in Cheltenham. Many promising moves were
undone by dropped balls, forward passes and a number of indiscretions
severely punished by the referee.
Starting brightly, full back Hewitt
timed his insertion into the back line perfectly to ghost in for Chinnor’s
first try after 6 minutes. Towards the end of the first half Chinnor traded
penalties with Old Patesians to go in 8-3 ahead at the break.
A dropped ball by Chinnor direct from
the restart kick led to a penalty scored by Old Pats’ Adam Seager. Playing
down the famous slope suited the home side and continued pressure led to Old
Pats only try of the day. A neat break from the base of the scrum by No 8
James Pettigrew led to the try from winger Matt Norman. Now leading 11-3,
Old Pats failed to convert.
Five minutes later, a timely hack down
field by Chinnor’s blind side flanker Jackman from a scrum led to Chinnor’s
second try scored by winger O’Mahony after good work by centre Oxley. The
try was unconverted but Chinnor had regained the lead 13-11. Mazy running
from Powell and the rest of the Chinnor backs released winger Carter for an
easy run–in try only to be called back controversially by the referee for a
forward pass. Hewitt then bagged another penalty to increase the Chinnor
lead to 16-11.
The last 10 minutes were played almost
exclusively in the Chinnor 22 with the Chinnor defence repulsing wave after
wave of attack from Old Pats. Chinnor’s determined defence was duly rewarded
when the referee, Claire Daniels, blew for full time leaving Chinnor the
victors by 16-11.
Chinnor played the better rugby but
imprecision in the basics of the game reduced their potential score
considerably. When they eliminate the simple errors, they will run in some
high scores. So, still undefeated, they face another serious test at home
next week against old rivals Reading.
