21 Apr - Chinnor IV XV 40 vs. Reading III XV 27This week was the seasons climax for Chinnor IV’s. Leaving weeks of rust behind in the changing room, the IV’s took to the pitch in bright spring sunshine to embrace a new era under the firm leadership of Gordon “Voldemort” Fennell. A rolling substitution policy allowed Voldmort to continually pull off players throughout the game, definitely an advantage in the near desert like conditions. Chinnor started well but were then guilty of poor defence allowing Reading in for a soft try in the first 5 minutes. Unperturbed Chinnor carried on, bolstering their lines until the thirteenth minute when taking one against the head, IV team stalwart Mike “Sippy” Hughes robbed Reading on their 22. Voldmort broke, fed Andy “Not related“ Healey who took a nice line, and with players hanging off him made Chinnors first try. Thadimus Maximus added the conversion, 7-5. Minutes later an interception by Rob “Andrew” Atkin near the halfway saw the IV team Veteran make ground then feed Thadimus who sprinted to the corner to touch down. Adding his own conversion, 14-5. Reading were a strong side, and like Chinnor a mix of wise heads with pacey youth. Not lying down they worked their way in to the Chinnor half. The ball was span out to their elusive, but not unstoppable 12 who watched by several Chinnor players, ran through for another soft try, 14-10. Finishing the season as he started, Gavin “Gone in 40 minutes” Williams went off after 20 Minutes, allowing Pete “Can’t believe he’s a vet” McDermott back on. With the rust finally gone, the now well oiled IVth team started to play some entertaining rugby. Chinnor’s next score came through Chris “Half” Price cutting through the Reading line at pace on their 22. Possession gained through sterling work by Terry “And June” Chappell, “Boots” and John “2 for a” Pound. Although Chinnor kept their lead, Reading were never far behind, with both sides exchanging tries as the game progressed. Another Chinnor score came through new face Kieron “Village” Hall, as the talented winger touched down the corner after some nice interplay with Max “imum” Williams and “Mucky”. The second half saw a few changes with Rob “Thrush” Hill, Tony “Arfur” Daley and Special guest Darren “Tom” Jones coming on. Controversy followed a few minutes later, as the ever present Mike “Harry Potter” Bambrook charged down a kick in the Reading 22, scooped up the ball and sprinted to the line, only to have his touchdown attempt adjudged not grounded. A quick appearance by “Danger” Will Dickinson for the injured Thadius allowed “Danger” to show some of his skill back from injury. A real crowd pleaser appeared after strong pressure from Reading. Thadius picked up a loose ball on the Chinnor 22, hand off one player, ran into the Reading 22, handed off a second then touched down under the posts, adding his own conversion, 35-20. Reading replied with a well worked try after relentless attacks in the Chinnor half. Another attack in the Chinnor 22 saw Reading spin the ball wide but loose to their outside center and winger. Ever Vigilant “Can’t believe” took possession, was just caught, passed to Rob “Andrew” who span out to “Half” Price who ran 40 yards only to be bought down. “Half” off loaded to “Andrew” to go over in the corner. The final whistle went with the score 40-27 to Chinnor. An end to end game played by both sides in good spirit. Man of the match was Thadius. Chinnor IV’s would once again like to thank their ever loyal supporters, especially Malcolm, and look forward to entertaining them in the new season. Scorers: 10 Mar - Drifters II XV 12 vs. Chinnor 4th XV 17Leaving the ever watchful eyes of the Kites, Chinnor IV’s travelled to Drifters this week. A lovely spring day with the Daffodils swaying in the breeze set the scene for this league match. Chinnor started well, Max “imum” Williams was like a rash over the Drifters defence, Rob “Roy” McLachlan was stout in the front row, allowing Chinnor to assert their dominance in the scrum, Pete “Can’t believe he’s a vet” McDermott solid in defence on the wing against the tactical kicking from Drifters. Chinnor found themselves in Drifters 22 after a knock on following pressure from the Chinnor IV collective. The resulting scrum saw Chinnor push on, Drifters unable to withstand the runaway train of the whole 8, conceded yards until Gordon “Voldemort” Fennell pushed over and touched down assisted by Gavin “Full on” Williams. Thad “ ‘ll do nicely” Cooper added the conversion, 0-7. The game continued with both sides taking turns with possession and gaining ground. Mike “Harry Potter” Bambrook issuing a constant stream of encouragement from the second row, with his counterpart Sam “son” Blewitt playing a quiet, calculating game all over the pitch. Chinnor's second try came through Gordon “Voldemort” Fennell breaking from 8, drawing in his opposite number, off loaded to Gavin “Full on” Williams who with new found confidence after completing two full games, side stepped wrong footing 2 defenders to touch down near the corner. Drifters were not lying down, and following a quick penalty near the Chinnor 22 drove Forward, rucked, recycled and went over for their first score. 7-12. Chinnor maintained their defence forcing Drifters to kick. This allowed Ben “Constipated” Bishop following in the mould of the IV’s deceptively elusive full back, Pete “Can’t believe he’s a vet” McDermott, to run a series of adjacent lines to near the try line. One such run set the Chinnor Machine into action once again. Andy “Not related” Healey gave bullet like service to Thad “ ‘ll do nicely” and allowed the backs to show their mettle. Another breakdown resulted with the ball finding “Voldemort”, who with no hesitation gained full speed, shimmied around two defenders and set-up another breakdown near the Drifters line. Drifters held firm and Chinnor attacked again. This time Chinnor drove up the left wing with Kieron “Town” Hall kicking through and touching down, 7-17. The second half saw both sides rally. Chinnor were the favourites but were making hard work of things. Drifters were showing dogged determination. A scrum in the Chinnor 22 was secured by the forwards, the ball span out by “not related” saw a rare fumble by Chinnor, pounced on by Drifters to touch down, 12-17. Chinnor continued their ruck, recycle, spin to the backs routine with almost fault less execution. Rob “Mini egg” Hill acting as scrum half when needed. The Chinnor backs were working their socks off, Rob “Andrew” Atkin selling dummies like there was no tomorrow. Another similar attack saw Alex “Que?” Cininas take on 3 defenders on the right wing. Touching down right on the flag in true Johnny Wilkinson style, the score was only disallowed after going to the fourth official. The score remained at 12-17 when the final whistle blew. Another game played in good spirits by both sides, Chinnor ever inspired by their Captain, Rowan “18 hours” Foster. Scorers: 24 Feb - Chinnor 4th XV 48 vs. Harwell 2nd XV 10Under circling Kites in an ever changing skyline Chinnor IV played hosts to Harwell in their home league fixture this week. With a delayed kick off, and being rusted up for two weeks, the normally well oiled machine of Chinnor IV conceded a soft try from the first kick. Harwell took the initiative from possession at a ruck on Chinnor's 22. Seeing the overlap on the blind Harwell drove over in the corner after the Chinnor defence were too slow to align themselves. 0-5. Gordon “Voldemort” Fennel rallied the team, and with re-oiled vigour, Chinnor woke up and reasserted their dominance. Working their way into Harwell's half, repeated rucks saw the ball span out by Stu “Welcome back” Williams to Rob “Andrew” Atkin, then back inside to the queue of forwards to drive on. Now inside Harwell's 22, the continual pressure from the forwards, with the ever instrumental Rob “Roy” McLachlan, saw Terry “and June” Chappell swat the Harwell defence like flies to charge over from yards out. “BishBashBosh” added the conversion. 7-5. Chinnor's second try followed minutes later, with the bit between their teeth Chinnor were firing all on cylinders. An overthrown Harwell line out saw Tony “Arfur” Daley collect, offload to “Voldemort” who opened up the Harwell defence, and set Max “imum” on his scything solo run through the remaining Harwell defence. 12-5. Sensing this was the time to take the game, Chinnor stoked up the boiler yet again. A breakdown just inside the Harwell half saw the ball span out, then through the Chinnor hands to “BishBashBosh” to run inside Harwell's last man to touch down in the corner. Gavin “Full on” Williams, celebrated completing a full game with two tries. His first came through slick work on the left side, surprising the whole team with his speed and agility, “Full on” darted through to touch down on the left corner. Further tries from “BishBashBosh” and Rob “Andrew” Atkin followed, to see Chinnor lead 36-5 at the break. The whistle blew for the start of the second half. Harwell had regrouped and were not lying down. Using their ruck and driving close in technique, they worked their way into Chinnor's 22. Drawing the Chinnor defence, Harwell took route 1 and added another 5 points minutes into the second half. Realising Harwell were still very much in the game, Chinnor took stock and tightened their belts. A kick to touch gave Chinnor a line out inside Harwell's 22. Yet another neat take from Richard “Jabba the” Hutt allowed the pack to set-up a maul and drive on. Stealing yards with the line beckoning, the ball was well protected inside the Chinnor mass. Then breaking out Rob “Mini egg” Hill was pushed over the try line by “Bad Boy Boots” in the corner. The game ebbed and flowed as both sides tried to make inroads. Another line out, this time on Chinnor's 10m line, again taken by “Jabba”, driven on by “Bad Boy” erupted in another rolling maul charging into Harwell's 22. Calmly controlled by “Welcome back”, who set-up the indomitable backs to demonstrate textbook passing and control. The ball went through five sets of hands to “BishBashBosh”, who with his first pass of the day off loaded to “Full on” to take Chinnor's last try. Sponsored by Thames Water Auxiliary Training Staff, the loyal Chinnor supporters were boosted with some members attending., and were able to celebrate their convincing victory. Scorers: 20 Jan - Winslow 1st XV 8 vs. Chinnor 4th XV 12Chinnor IV’s travelled to Winslow this week, greeted by a wet pitch that would thwart their running style of rugby, more akin to beach rugby, coupled with a blustering wind that would scupper their free flowing play. Winning the toss, Chinnor chose the favourable end. Having gone with the wind, Chinnor soon set about keeping Winslow in their own 22, forcing Winslow to clear allowing the Chinnor lineout to show its strengths. Throwing in was Matt “Billy the Depilator” Locke, who with smooth work, boldly went about his duties with a frictionless performance, a shave better than his opposite number. Catching as ever was Mike “Harry Potter” Bambrook, feeding his fellow forwards. Chinnor's first points came through Gavin “Gone in 40 minutes” Williams, following a pick up at the back of a ruck yards from the line. Sterling work particularly by “Boots”, Rob “Roy” McLachlan and Mike “Mad” Neuman acting as scrum half prior to the ruck, made this possible. Chinnor kept Winslow in their own half for the next 20 minutes, until against the run of play, just inside Chinnor’s half, Winslow broke inside the backs to allow their fullback to touch down near the corner, 5-5. Unperturbed, Chinnor kept their well oiled machine working. Another breakdown in Winslow’s 22 followed, the ball was span left to find Rob “Andrew” Atkin, who having sold more dummies than Mothercare, sold yet another inside to go over near the left touchline. In the difficult conditions Thad “ ‘ll do nicely” added the 2 points with a sweet kick. The second half saw changes on both sides, on came Richard “Jabba the” Hutt for ”Harry”, and Rob “Napoleon” Hill for “Mad” Mike who had suffered a shoulder injury, and new face, Guy “The linguist” Cunningham on for “Gone in 40 minutes”. Now facing the wind, Chinnor pushed on. A kick down field was returned by Winslow, anticipated by Pete “Can’t believe he’s a vet” McDermott, Chinnor replied in similar fashion. Confused by his position, Rowan “Roland” Foster mistakenly acted infront of play giving Winslow a penalty. With the scores close, Winslow kicked just wide to let Chinnor off. A series of penalties awarded to Winslow followed, they only capitalised on one, 8-12. Winslow tried to play the kicking game to pin Chinnor down in their own half, but kicking on the full, allowed the Chinnor line out to work its magic yet again. Against the throw in, Richard “Jabba the” Hutt stole so much ball he was almost reported for his crimes. With their own ball “Jabba” ensured possession. Following such a line out, the ball came inside to Kieran “Albert” Hall on the wing to slice through the Winslow line. In support as ever, “Boots” collected off “Albert” to take Chinnor nearer the Winslow line. But in a rare occurrence, the big guns from the Chinnor artillery failed to go off, as the ball was spilled over the line by John “Mr” Grimsdale. With the minutes ticking down, Ben “Ralph” Bishop electing to keep it down in the windy conditions, ran a kick back inside the Winslow half, just caught by the last player into touch saw the final whistle. A solid performance in the less than solid conditions, head coach Dickinson was pleased with today’s game, seeing his training come into play on the pitch.
Scorers: 13 Jan - Chinnor 4th XV 10 vs. Wallingford 2nd XV 17Under stormy skies Chinnor IV’s played host to league leaders Wallingford this week. From the start the game ebbed and flowed as both sides tested each other. Chinnor found themselves camped on their own 22 for a sustained period, but held their lines and eventually cleared through Rob “Bend it like Beckham” Atkin. As the game developed, a definite battle was developing, sensed by the ever loyal Chinnor crowd. Just inside the second quarter, Wallingford eventually scored after their 10 jinked inside to create an overlap for their winger to touch down in the corner. Chinnor replied following a penalty to touch. The ensuing lineout saw Mike “Harry Potter” Bambrook collect, Tony “Arfur” Daley clean up, then with Rob “Roy” McLachlan form the Chinnor IV mauling machine to trundle on and allow “Arfur” to touch down. 5-5. The second half saw the score line level, the game really on and the tension building. This pressure told on the Wallingford forwards, as twice they were marched back 10 yards for dissent. Wallingford continually pressured Chinnor's scrum, this combined with the near hurricane conditions saw Chinnor fall foul of Miss Demeanour, conceding penalties and scrums. Despite this, their never say die attitude came to the fore to keep the whole team focussed. Wallingford's second try came after Chinnor conceded a penalty on their own 10 yard line, slow reaction allowed Wallingford to gain yards, offload then touch down in the corner. 5-12. Chinnor kept working, but following a well worked backs move Wallingford touch down again to go 5-17 ahead. Digging deep, Chinnor rallied, the awesome machine that is the Chinnor IV pack, comprising of Richard “Jabba the” Hutt, Gordon “Voldemort” Fennell, John Pound “The Younger”, “Boots”, “Billy Elliot”, “Roland” and Rob “Napoleon” Hill, worked their way up field. In a near mirror image move of their first try Chinnor mauled their way towards the Wallingford line, where the whole pack went over to reveal Marcus “The Depilatory” Stevens having touched down. A well matched game that could have gone either way, complimented by Wallingford, this was only Chinnor's third loss of the season. Scorers: 6 Jan 2007 - Littlemore 5 vs. Chinnor IV XV 22Chinnor IV’s started their 2007 campaign away to Littlemore this week, with a water logged pitch and the rain pouring down both sides had an interesting time ahead. Littlemore started well pressurising Chinnor after some good handling and offloading in the tackle, made their way into Chinnor's 22. Chinnor held firm and soon replied in similar fashion, winning a scrum on Littlemore's 22. Mike “Boring” Williams breaking from 8 formed a ruck yards out. With an excellent pick up in the very muddy conditions more suitable to his pigs, “Mad” Mike Neuman in familiar surroundings, went over for Chinnor's first try of 2007. “Thad” added the conversion. Chinnor continued to keep good possession with the spell binding performance of Mike “Harry Potter” Bambrook in the line working well with Gordon “Voldemort” Fennell. “Potter” showing his Quidditch practice was playing off. With the rain ever relentless, Chinnor kept Littlemore on the back foot. Forced to clear their lines, their kick found Ben “Hugh” Bishop” at fullback, who snaked back, opting not to use his winger in support, Roland “Rat” Foster, “Hugh” weaselled past the last defender to run in Chinnor's second try. Leading 0-12 at half time, Chinnor made some changes. On were Tony “Arfur” Daley and Richard “Jabba the” Hutt, with Alex “Jug” Cininas. Off came Terry “And June” Chappell, “Potter”, and Pete “Can’t believe he’s a vet” McDermott. Littlemore upped their work rate and kept Chinnor on their 5 yard line, with scrum after scrum. Chinnor held firm, but eventually Littlemore's no. 8 went over for 5 points. With the game in the balance, the rain never ceasing, Chinnor never looked down. Tactical kicking from Rob “Andrew” Atkin, and back down to earth from treading the boards in West side story, Matt “Billy Elliott” Locke giving a unique demonstration of line out technique, left the opposition speechless. Collecting another kick, Ben “Hugh” Bishop touched down a second time after sickly sweet running, 5-17. Then from a restart, in a surprising run from the forwards, “Arfur “ collected, off loaded to “Boots” who broke through into Littlemore's half, popped to “Boring” Mike, who off loaded to “Voldemort” who in turn went to ground. “Boring” picked, then danced over for Chinnor's final score. A resilient performance by Chinnor this week, benefiting from a good bench this weeks game will be invaluable for their next game at home against league leaders Wallingford, who will be given a warm welcome by all from the IV’s. Chinnor IV’s would like to thank all their supporters from last year, especially Graham “Chips” Turner with Harry, and look forward to entertaining you all this year. Scorers: 2 Dec - Chinnor IV XV 27 vs. Grove III XV 0Bright sunshine and a crisp air greeted Chinnor as they continued their league campaign away to Grove this week. Conspicuous by his absence, Matt “Billy Elliott” Locke was busy treading the boards in Westside story at the new Theatre Oxford, leaving the game in the capable hands of his team-mates. Arriving a little late, and with hardly any warm up, Chinnor soon found themselves under pressure from the big Grove pack. Defending their line as Grove had a scrum on the Chinnor 5m line, Chinnor defended well, stealing the ball, Richard “Jabba the” Hutt allowed Andy “Not related” Healey to clear down field to touch. Chinnor found possession shortly afterwards, with the ball being span out from Rob “Andrew” Atkin at 10, to Ben “Not a” Forward then to Max “imum” Williams finally onto Alex “Que?” Cininas to run the wide line and touch down for Chinnor's first points. Suffering a minor injury to his kicking leg, Rob “Roy” McLachlan came off for Rob “Thrush” Hill in the front row. The game ebbed and flowed as Chinnor started to find their feet, a series of scrums followed as both sides suffered a number of minor offence’s. Winning one such scrum under pressure from the Grove pack being pushed backward, Gavin “Hastings” Williams got the ball out to the backs, quick passing saw Alex “Que?” Cininas spin inside his opposite number, angle across to the Grove uprights and touch down under the posts. “Not related” added the 2 points. 0-12 to Chinnor at half time. Both sides made some changes and the second half got under way. Having a great game in the loose, Max “imum” Williams received the ball from a ruck on the halfway, cutting left he opened up the Grove backs, a breakdown near the grove line saw Mike “Thunderclap” Neuman acting as scrum half, spin the ball left to “Que?” to allow the talented winger to sprint for the line for his third try. The Chinnor forwards were having a hard time with the heavier Grove pack, but were holding their own, and giving good ball to their backs. Richard “Jabba the” Hutt stealing well at every opportunity. Another Chinnor attack saw a breakdown yards from the Grove line, joining the line and calling the ball out, Pete “Can’t believe he’s a vet” McDermott created a simple overlap as Rob “Thrush” Hill picked, span right to “Cwosi” again to John “Half a” Pound then on to McDermott to touch down. Confident now, Chinnor ran the ball back from a restart, ball in hand “Flash” Gordon Fennell took the ball back into Groves half before being tackled, the forwards recycled then Max “imum” again gained good ground before offloading to “Flash” who sprinted for the Line, caught just short and with “Not related” in support, Chinnor touched down through “Slick” Stevens taking route one through the ruck, 0-27 to Chinnor. Chinnor kept Grove in their own half for most of the remainder of the game until the final whistle went. A solid performance by Chinnor in a game played in good spirit by both sides. Chinnor's man of the match, Max “imum” Williams for his consistent play throughout the game. Scorers: 25 Nov - Chinnor IV XV 21 vs. Tadley II XV 5Grey skies gave way to bright sunshine this week as Chinnor IV’s played hosts to Tadley II’s. With Tadley lying 3rd in the league Chinnor had a task in front of them. An auspicious occasion as this was the last game for stalwart Jamie “Achilles” Dickinson before moving to pastures new. Chinnor fielded a strong bench including Singhis Thing, Pearce Film-Lid and the Reverend R. Sleeker. Both teams started well testing each in the first few minutes. Chinnor kept possession well and worked their way into Tadley's 22. Following a neat line out deftly taken by Mike “The Limping Salmon” Bambrook the ball was span out to the backs. A quick pass from John “Peter” Sellars to “Achilles” saw the talented centre scythe through the Tadley backs, outpace their fullback and touch down near the posts. Doug “I’m Free” Humphries added the two points. Unperturbed Tadley put Chinnor under pressure straight away, and following some good recycling responded with a try near the Chinnor uprights, 7-5. With the game really on now, and the crowd enjoying themselves, Chinnor suffered a number of injuries. First to succumb was Mike “The Limping Salmon” Bambrook, closely followed by Tony “Arfur” Daley, then Marcus “Slick” Stevens. Chinnor quickly readjusted with Richard “Jabba the” Hutt, Mike “Thunderclap” Neuman and Pete “Can’t believe he’s a vet” McDermott taking to the field. The second half saw Chinnor with renewed confidence, keeping the work rate up and playing their own game. Better work at the breakdown saw Chinnor with more possession, picking up at one ruck after creating the previous breakdown, Chris “Bison” Hutton took route one and found himself sprinting for the line from Tadley's 22, with the line looming “Bison” offloaded to Andy “Not related” Healey to touch down under the posts. “I’m Free” adding the conversion. Chinnor had adapted to Tadley's offloading in the tackle and closed their attacks down well. The Chinnor forwards were coming into their own, with Mike Thunderclap” Neuman making himself known, demonstrating his familiar hand off technique to the full. “Flash” Gordon Fennell making several long runs, and skipper Rowan “Brendan” Foster tackling well. Such was their confidence that prop Rob “Roy” McLachlan showed his kicking skills with a neat chip and chase in one attack. Chinnor leading 14-5 were ever confident, another attack saw a ruck form just inside Tadley's half, Andy “Not related” Healey picked up and span left to Pete “Can’t believe he’s a vet” McDermott who swung left then cut inside just being caught by the last player, quickly offloading to Fraser “No name” who span the ball to Ben “Cohen” Bishop to run wide to touch down under the posts. “Cohen” added the 2 points. A solid performance by Chinnor this week, despite having some familiar faces missing, the team put together a good display, something they can build on in the coming weeks.
Scorers: 21 Oct - Wallingford II XV 20 vs. Chinnor IV XV 5Grey skies and blustering winds greeted Chinnor IV’s as they continued their league campaign away to Wallingford this week. With the home side first team available, Wallingford offered seven subs to Chinnor's 3, this would be a test for Chinnor. Electing to go with the wind Chinnor started well and keeping Wallingford's attacks at bay, worked their way into the oppositions 22. Chinnor then made camp, each time Wallingford cleared their lines Chinnor came back. Several forays resulted in two touchdowns, both adjudged to be held up. Eventually after drawing in most of the Wallingford team, and making use of the available overlap, Ben “Not a “ Forward went over for Chinnor. An over zealous decision following a marginal tackle saw Chinnor reduced to 14 players. Wallingford capitalised and span the ball wide to touch down in the corner. Chinnor were caught napping. The second half saw heavy rain and the wind drop, ideal conditions for Chinnor. With Ben “Cohen” Bishop back on after a short rest, Chinnor should have consolidated the work in the first half. Instead, with more dubious decisions going against Chinnor, the visitors found themselves two tries down. Spurred on by “Flash” Gordon Fennel, the forwards worked their way nearer Wallingford's line. Neat mauling by Mike “Thunderclap” Neuman and Richard “Jabba the” Hutt saw the forwards go over, only to be adjudged held up from the unsighted official. Chinnor need to learn from this valuable lesson in the coming weeks. 14 Oct - Chinnor IV XV 46 vs. Marlow III XV 7Bouncing back after their first defeat in over 20 games last week, Chinnor IV’s started to show a return to form. A strong bench of Steve “Floella” Benjamin, Dave “Lewis” Collins, Graham “Chips” Turner and super sub Mike “Just a half” Pearman, stood Chinnor in good shape. Back from injury and making cutting runs, Terry “And June” Chappell with Mike “The Leaping Salmon” Bambrook made their presence known. Chinnor started well keeping Marlow at bay to start with, but did allow them to penetrate on occasion. After 10 minutes, Will “Hurricane” Dickinson intercepted a pass, dodged inside and found himself sprinting for the line from 40 yards out. Shortly after Marlow replied with a well worked try driving over the Chinnor line a few yards from the posts. Firm instruction from “Flash” Gordon Fennel focussed Chinnor, and from that point their defence held firm. Marlow suffered injuries and found themselves short, up steps Matt “Billy Elliot” Locke to step into the breach and plug the gap. Chinnor now retained the ball well and made use of it. Further tries followed, a neat interception by Ben “Dover” Bishop saw the talented young player run in one of his 3 tries. Rob “Andrew” Atkin playing at 9, teased Marlow with his almost undetectable dummy, slicing through then rolling off to touch down under the posts. Another sweet try by Rowan “Brendan” Foster for Chinnor, after the talented winger ran the outside line following slick passing on the Marlow 22. Chinnor continued their good work, Mark “Coxy” Cox showing a good tackle display on his wing. Max, the only Williams’ triplet playing today had a superb game at 7. More tries from “Boots”, conversion from the instructional Rob “Kent” Hill added to the Chinnor score. A welcome return for Richard “Jabba the” Hutt, allowed Chinnor good possession today. The subtle blend of wise heads and talented youth will see the IV’s continue their almost unbeaten run from last season. The IV’s would like to dedicate thus season to Andy “The Tourist” Gilmore in recognition of his loyalty to the side over the last 15 years. Scorers: 30 Sep - Chinnor IV XV 0 vs. Redingensians III XV 0Chinnor IV’s played host to Redingensians III’s this week. Conspicuous by their absence this week, Mike “The Limping Salmon” and “June” Chappell got the chop due to injury. The side was boosted by the Williams’ triplets, in the form of Max, Gavin and Mike. Stormy conditions prevailed as both sides tested each other. Water tight defence by Chinnor forced ‘ensians to kick on, where in each occasion Jamie “Achilles” Dickinson or Pete “Can’t believe he’s a vet” McDermott would collect, and send ‘ensians back into their own half. Chinnor gained confidence and upped the work rate. Forced to run off with a toe injury, Matt “Johnny” Walker made way for Rob “Kent” Hill, visiting from his new county. Undeterred Chinnor pressed on, camping in ‘ensians 22 for the last quarter of the first half. Despite this no score came. Despite changing pitches twice to an injury, Chinnor maintained their work rate. The second half saw ‘ensians turn up the pressure, several kicks were touched down by “Achilles” or “Can’t believe” denying ‘ensians. Gavin “triplet” Williams had to substitute himself, on came super sub Ben “Evening all” Bennett at 9. Under continuous pressure, the Chinnor pack held their own forcing 3 penalties in ‘ensians half. In the near hurricane conditions, Will “Danger” Dickinson hit the upright but could not convert. Both sides were relieved when the final whistle came. With a few cogs missing, the Chinnor machine lacked its usual power; the regular team may have seen a different story. A solid performance all round 23 Sep - Oakmedians III XV 24 vs. Chinnor IV XV 49After 15 years playing for Chinnor, Andy “The Tourist” Gilmore is pulling himself for the final time and deporting himself to the states. Chinnor were quickly on the attack and crossed the line 3 times in the first 15 minutes. With Rob “Andrew” Atkin, Andy “Not related” Healey and “Coxy” Cox all touching down. A scrum inside Oakmedians 22 was cleared only as far as Pete “Can’t believe he’s a vet” McDermott, who ran it back and found “not related” who fired it wide to Mike “Thommo” Thompson. A quick pass to Rob “Andrew” on the loop and then a well executed switch saw “not related” touch down in the corner. Further magic in the backs was orchestrated by Andy “The Tourist” Gilmore executing his plethora of moves, which saw Chinnor run in a total of nine tries. These involved old hand John “Lennox” Lacey, Dave “Stroppy” Wilson, Gordon “Flash” Fennell, Will “Danger” Dickenson, Terry “And June” Chappel, Matt “Billy Elliott” Locke, Rob “Roy”, Mike “Leaping Salmon” Bambrook, Dave “Don’t panic” Hanlon, “Boots”, Mike “The try” Williams, “Zorro”, and Stan “Boom Boom” all ably watered by slick. A well rounded performance by all, and a fitting tribute to the “Tourist” who is acknowledged as the man who made the team the 4’s are today. Scorers: 16 Sep - Chinnor IV XV 27 vs. Drifters II XV 17Chinnor IV’s played host to Drifters this week. A special game for Chinnor , as this would probably be the last game on Chinnor soil for Andy “The Tourist” Gilmore, who after 15 years at Chinnor is soon to move to sunnier climes. Drifters fielded a youthful team against Chinnor. Chinnor’s mix of wise heads interspersed with younger players needed to retain possession and play a tight game to keep in the running. Chinnor did just that from the start, a scrum inside Drifters' 22 was turned over, Andy “Not related” Healey, broke right, snaked inside the Drifters winger and fullback to touch down for 5 points. “Hula” Hooper added the conversion. A few minutes later after more neat work, Chinnor were awarded a scrum 5 yards out. Breaking from 8, Gordon “Flash” Fennell powered over for another 5 points. Chinnor had to re-jig the team, as Matt “Johnny” Walker pulled himself off due to injury. Will “Danger” Dickinson moved to 12, and on came Dave “Stroppy” Wilson at 14. This unsettled Chinnor somewhat, Drifters capitalised as their backs used the space given to them to give 5 points. 12-5. Chinnor rallied, pressurising Drifters in their 22. The Drifters fullback cleared high and long down the touchline. Pete “Can’t believe he’s a vet” McDermott took the ball with his unique netball style technique, and replied in similar fashion. With “Can’t believe” and Mark “Coxy” Cox in hot pursuit the drifters fullback was forced to run the ball out 5 yards from his line. The Chinnor lineout machine came into its own again, as Mike “The leaping Salmon” Bambrook caught the ball, combined with “Flash” Fennell to drive to the line, where the ever present Mike “Thunderclap” Neuman touched down, 19-5. Ever wary Chinnor kept a tight line on defence. Superb line out dominance, and scrum superiority starved Drifters backs of the ball. Prominent in the loose and restarts Will “Slim” Battonly making his presence known. Quick support at the breakdown pressured Drifters further. Mike “The try” Williams forced Drifters to concede a penalty for holding on, “Hula” slotted the penalty for 3 points. More re-jigging saw skipper, Rowan “18 hours” Foster move to his more natural position of 13, with Fraser “No name” to 6. Chinnor took the pressure off slightly, Drifters upped their work rate and made 2 tries, 22-17. With the game really on Chinnor moved up gears. “Hula” kicked for a lineout on the Drifters 10 yard line. The ball was stolen and the ensuing maul rumbled towards the touchline. Drifters did all they could but in the end Chinnor were unstoppable. A cheer went up as Mike “Thunderclap” Neuman touched down to seal the game. A superb performance all round. 9 Sep - Abingdon II XV 5 vs. Chinnor IV XV 31Chinnor IV’s league campaign started this week away to Abingdon. A bright day, hard pitch and some regular faces missing would test Chinnor. Conspicuous by their absence, Andy “soon to be deported” Gilmore and Rob “Andrew” Atkin. Chinnor started well pressurising Abingdon in their own half. The ball was spun right by “Hula” Hooper to Ben “not a” forward at outside centre, who cut back inside dodging players for 5 points. Unable to gel as normal, Chinnor retained good possession, but could not capitalise on this through poor handling. Despite this a scrum just inside the Abingdon half, saw Andy “not related” Healey pick up and zigzag through to touch down under the posts, in close support “Hula” a little behind. Conversion by “Johnny” Walker for 12-0. Abingdon continued to pressure Chinnor on all fronts. Holding their own in the front row, Matt “Billy Elliot” Locke with Terry “and June” Chappell, provided a stable platform for Chinnor to work from. This was grasped by Randal “and Hopkirk” Whittaker, as the talented scrum half took possession from new face Tim “the wing” Bowers on the wing, slipping through for 5 points. The second half saw Abingdon bring on new players. Chinnor's super sub, Fraser “no name” on for the irreplaceable Mike “Thunderclap” Neuman. An Abingdon scrum with slow ball was intercepted by “Hula” Hooper who jinked through for a soft try. A spirited Abingdon continued with renewed vigour and more substitutions. Chinnor held their own. A stolen ball by Sam “son” Blewitt on the Abingdon 22, allowed “Hula” to use his weight and fall over the line. Abingdon managed a try in the last minutes. A better performance by Chinnor, but some tweaking is needed before next weeks home fixture against Drifters. Scorers: 2 Sep - Chinnor IV XV vs. Winslow
