Westcombe Park (Away)

Chinnor 1st XV 8 vs. Westcombe Park 1st XV 85
National League 3 South
Saturday 7th October 2006

Chinnor went down to a comprehensive defeat administered by a Westcombe Park outfit who appeared at times to have come from a different planet. Westcombe Park were not only yards faster with the ball in their hands but their defence obliterated Chinnor's attacking options. The statistics suggest that Chinnor had some 48% of possession in the first half which in itself indicates the difference between the sides both in defence and attack. Gideon Doux, Westcombe Park's No.12 was an immense presence , in both size and ability.. He broke through the middle of the field it appeared at will. Chinnor's cause was not helped by some fairly inept tackling in this area. Indeed the space Westcombe Park created in the area between the back of the lineout and the offside line caused constant embarrassment to the home side throughout the game. Westcombe Park have a settled side , well led by ex Oxford University skipper Tom Layman with another Oxford blue James Whittington at fly-half, and this is evident in abundance.

Whittington opened the scoring with a penalty in the 7th minute with Chinnor being adjudged offside in front of the posts. With Doux making his presence felt, in more ways than one, Layman added a try just a minute later. With Doux scoring himself and further tries coming from Thorpe and Denton before the break Westcombe Park were already distancing themselves from Chinnor.

That all of these tries were converted by Whittington added to Chinnor's woes. Richard Williams kicked a penalty in the 10th minute and missed a sitter just 5 minutes later but by then it was evident that it was going to be a torrid afternoon for the Chinnor outfit. At 31pts to 3 at the interval, the Chinnor faithful were hoping for a second half resurgence as they had managed against Hertford, but with Westcombe Park scoring straight after the interval it became obvious that Chinnor were looking at a damage limitation exercise. Further tries from Layman, Stenhouse x 4, Hardcastle, Johnson and Lindfield ( a quite superb No.7 ), all converted by Whittingham made for this second half route Chinnor did breach the Westcombe Park defence in the 75th when Williams supported a move to score in the corner.

Westcombe Park are by far and away the best team that Chinnor have come up against in many a long year. Possibly Chinnor were unfortunate to meet them on a day where they hardly spilt a ball or missed a tackle but missed kicks to touch, ill directed kicking in attack, missed tackles and poor defensive alignment hardly supported their cause. They must learn from this otherwise its going to be a long , hard season.
