Westcombe Park 1st XV 61 vs. Chinnor 1st XV
12
National League 3 South
Saturday 3rd February 2007
Although the score line indicates a total thumping , Chinnor were better
than the result suggests. Once again they were competitive for periods of
the game. Just 5 minutes before the interval they were trailing by 3 points,
but two tries in as many minutes as half time approached put them on the
back foot. Westcombe Park probably have the best back-row in the League. In
James Lindfield at open side, Thomas Hayman No.8, and Captain they field a
potent force which Chinnor found difficult in combating. Indeed Lindfield
was on the score sheet for the first of his three tries in the second
minute. With Whittington, another of Westcombe Park's. Cambridge Blues
adding the conversion, Park were off to a flying start. With centre William
Hefer scoring in the 8th.
minute and Whittingham kicking a penalty just afterwards Chinnor were 15
pts adrift with just 12 minutes played. Anthony Pyers then got Chinnor 's
first points with an intercept try. This was converted by James Hewitt which
atoned for his earlier penalty miss.. Another intercept try by Richard
Williams put Chinnor back in the game, but tries by Lindfield and Greenaway
gave the half-time score of 25pts to 12.
Once again Chinnor failed to improve on their half-time score. Two tries
by influential No.8 Hayman in the 48th and 55 minute increased Park's lead.
At this time Chinnor had their best period of the game, even though Park
broke away for yet another Lindfield try. With just 11 minutes remaining,
Park winning by 40 pts to 12, and Chinnor still pressing although down to 14
with Ed Rixon sin-binned for a professional foul, there was an air of
respectability about proceedings, but then three late tries by Barnett x2
and Greenaway, all converted by Whittingham did not paint a true picture of
the game.
Chinnor are undoubtedly finding it difficult to come to terms with the
intensity of the game at this level. They can compete for periods during the
game, but this has to be for the whole of the 80 minutes. Other teams have
the ability to be patient, defend well when they have to, then pile on the
pressure when they sense the opportunity. The gap between South West 1 and
National League 3 is immense which Chinnor are finding to their cost. The
positives are still evident though. They cannot be faulted for endeavour and
enthusiasm. They are keeping their heads held high
