Chinnor 1st XV 5 vs. Havant 1st XV 18
National League 3 South
Saturday 17th February 2007

This was a gutsy performance and well deserving of at least a point. Havant fielded quite an enormous pack of forwards who matched their brawn with a considerable amount of aggression. This was illustrated in that they had two players yellow carded for foul play and indeed it could have been more had the linesman spotted a quite blatant act of stamping. The Havant bench also  made a couple of tactical substitutions mid way through the second half, as they must have recognised that a couple of their players were sailing close to the wind. Chinnor made one enforced change from the programme with Ed Orchard coming in for James Hewitt who broke his hand during the week playing for his University.

Chinnor caught Havant napping straight from the kick-off to set up a good attacking position. This was immediately nullified when the referee penalised Gareth Duder for a crooked feed into the scrum. With Duder again penalised for the same offence at the very next Chinnor put-in, Havant were getting a free pass into Chinnor territory which they capitalised with open side flanker Steve Cruddas going over under the posts after 4 minutes. With Pucs Ngapaku adding the conversion and then a penalty in the 10th minute, Havant were 10 points up in as many minutes with Chinnor having hardly touched the ball They then got well and truly into the game, going close on a couple of occasions. They were nearly over in the final minute of the half with Anthony Pyers being adjudged to have put a foot on the line before touching down. Both sides were down to 14 men during this period with Graeme Frith the Havant No. 8 in the bin for foul play and Johann de Bruin for preventing the release of the ball.

Chinnor had to re-arrange their three-quarters at the start of the second half with Oxley unable to resume due to a facial injury. With Paddy Conlon, on for the injured Tom Whelan the next to incur the referee's displeasure for a professional foul Chinnor  were back to 14 men. With Havant piling on the pressure Chinnor remained steadfast before Havant were awarded a penalty for Chinnor collapsing a maul, and Ngapaku kicked an easy penalty. It was then Jo Winpenny's turn for a 10 minute rest having been adjudged to have come in from the side of a maul, but once again matters were evened up when Havant's Barfoot entered the bin for foul play. Chinnor then enjoyed their best period of play and thoroughly deserved a try when they worked the ball wide and the strength of Anthony Pyers took him over. Thomas Wells then went over from a rolling maul to make the game safe for Havant. Chinnor then returned to the attack and when Eric Brown cut inside two players to make his way to score under the posts it seemed to all and sundry that Chinnor would salvage a point. However this was not to be as the referee called him back for crossing, and then blew the final whistle.
