Havant 1st XV 55 vs. Chinnor 1st XV 10
National League 3 South
Saturday 14th October 2006
With half-time approaching, Chinnor were
well in the game. They were behind by 8 pts to 5 and indeed had Richard
Williams been wearing his kicking boots they could well have held the
lead at this juncture. A try by Whittle , from a rolling maul on the
half-time whistle put Chinnor just 8 pts in arrears with all to play
for in the second half. However in a 20 minute period after the restart
Chinnor leaked 5 tries . It did not make for good watching for the away
supporters as a combination of bad defence, ill directed kicking and
simple handling errors gifted tries to the now pumped up Havant outfit.
Chinnor started with intent and
territorially were a match for their opponents. However pressure should
realise points, but unfortunately Chinnor seem to have lost the knack of
supplying the final pass that means the difference of being on the score
sheet or leaving it blank. With almost their first foray into Chinnor
territory Havant took the lead with a try by Raubenheimer from a rolling
maul. Chinnor responded with a penalty by Williams A penalty by Ngapaku
added to the Havant lead and with Williams failing with three further
attempts at goal Havant held on to their slight advantage until the
Whittle try in the 5th. minute of injury time.
A try by Cheung- Fook just two minutes
after the restart opened the flood gates. Further tries were scored at
regular intervals by Hardcastle x 2, his second being somewhat
embarrassing from a Chinnor perspective when he fielded a wayward
kick and proceeded to waltz through an entire wrong footed defence to
touch down under the posts, Stapleton, Frith and Hannibal. That Ngapaku
converted all of these only compounded Chinnor's woes. They did score a
consolation try in the final stages when Pyers went over with Williams
converting.
For Chinnor , Ben Hewitt again showed
touches of class with stand-in skipper Matt Hutchins never giving up and
leading from the front.
