Dings Crusaders 1st XV 19 vs. Chinnor 1st XV 18
National League League 3 South
Saturday 13th January 2007
Dings snatched victory with the very last
kick of the match. A penalty to Dings, hotly disputed by Chinnor, right
in front of the posts was a massive body blow to the visitors. It was a
huge decision by the referee and devastating from a Chinnor point of
view as they had lead throughout the game. With just minutes left
Chinnor had been awarded a penalty which they kicked to the corner some
4 metres from the Dings line. Replacement hooker Jonathan Phipps had
just come onto the park. He was penalised for a delayed put-in which was
somewhat harsh in that this was his first throw into the line. Dings
took this "get out of jail card " with some relish, moved the ball up
the field and gained the match winning penalty.
Chinnor took the lead in the 5th minute
with a well worked try from a set-piece. A scrummage some 30 metres from
Dings line saw Ed Orchard run a great angle, draw the full-back and put
the supporting Anthony Pyers in under the posts. A clinical move
straight from the practice ground. With Ben Hewitt converting and
kicking a penalty 8 minutes later Chinnor were 10pts to the good, and
well worth their lead. They were pegged back in the 19 minute when Dings
scrum-half Waylon Glasson completely outwitted the Chinnor defence
around the ruck to stroll over virtually unopposed. However with Ben
Hewitt adding another penalty Chinnor took a 13pts to 5 lead in at the
interval'
Two penalties by Dings fly-half and
Bristol Academy player Gareth Griffiths reduced the deficit. With Ben
Hewitt hitting the upright with a penalty attempt and seeing another
blown off course, Chinnor were still hanging onto their lead. Indeed
they then increased this when Anthony Pyers threw out a long pass to
Eric Brown who handed off his opposite number to sprint down the
touchline and score a thrilling try in the corner. Again Dings hit back
and from a free kick awarded for a crooked feed, unusual in this day and
age, Dings hit back for Griffiths to score and convert his own try. With
time ticking away it looked very much on the cards that Chinnor would
record their first away win of the season. However the final Griffiths
penalty denied them.
This was Chinnor's best performance of
the season. They played with passion and no little skill. Both Eric
Brown and Anthony Pyers had fine attacking games on the wing with James
Hewitt adding solidity in the centre.
