Clifton 1st XV 72 vs. Chinnor 1st XV 17
National League 3 South
Saturday 21st April 2007
This was a score line which just grew on Chinnor mainly
due to a hapless second half performance where they were naive in the
extreme. Even though the score would suggest otherwise, territorially
Chinnor were on a par with Clifton. However that's where the similarity
ended. Clifton were clinical in their handling , passing and option
taking whereas Chinnor were sadly lacking in these departments. Clifton
also defended well, with their first up tackling being top notch, and
were patient in their build-up. Chinnor were also second best in these
areas, to often forcing a pass, which was patently not on and hence, at
the drop of a hat, gave away the initiative which Clifton exploited with
alacrity. Too many Clifton tries were gifted in this manner, where
promising attacks broke down and seconds later Clifton were in under the
posts.Clifton desperately needed this win to remain in National
League Div. 3 South. They started well to score in the 3rd minute when
some poor tackling allowed Butler to cut through the Chinnor defence to
hand on to Blake to score and Barnes to convert. Two further tries by
Viol and Kent, the second aided by a most visible piece of obstruction,
visible that is to everyone with the exception of the referee and
linesman, put Clifton further ahead. Chinnor then enjoyed one of their
better periods when a delicate chip ahead by Ben Hewitt was collected by
Jaike Carter to score near the touchline with James Hewitt converting
with a fine kick. This pegged the home side back, but with the referee
giving Chevvy Pennycock, the England Under 21 and Bristol Academy
flanker a licence to do as he pleased, Clifton came back into Chinnor
territory where Barnes converted two penalties to give a half-time score
of 25pts to 7.
Chinnor started the second half well and looked as though they meant
business. However lack of patience and wrong option taking resulted in
just a penalty by Hewitt where this pressure could and should have been
more rewarding. At 25 pts to 10 , Chinnor in the ascendancy and with 30
minutes left, all it appeared was not lost. Then the wheels came off. A
penalty try from a scrum where Chinnor had not been in trouble all game
started the rot Instead of utilising the strong breeze at their backs
and kicking for the corners as Barnes did in the first half for Clifton,
Chinnor naively ran the ball from all positions and suffered the
consequences. Clifton eagerly swooped on the Chinnor handling mistakes
and with their speedy backs made then pay dearly. Tries in quick
succession from Lambert, Hall, Reid and Voil, all converted by Barnes
were putting Clifton out of sight. Ben Hewitt then scored for Chinnor
when another period of pressure was again looking to be a busted flush
due once again to wrong option taking. Brother James converted from the
touchline. Two late tries by Lambert and Pennycock both converted by
Barnes rounded off proceedings.
