Chinnor 1st XV 3 vs. Cinderford 1st XV 24
National League League 3 South
Saturday 6th January 2007

Although Cinderford were the better side and thoroughly deserved to win, the score line is somewhat flattering. Cinderford took their chances and scored from pressure they created whilst Chinnor who had both an equal amount of possession and pressure failed to turn this into points. Indeed  trailing by 7points at half time and with conditions slightly in their favour, it appeared that Chinnor were in with a shout, but a scything break by Dewi Scourfield on the dryer part of the ground to put in Lee Douglas under the posts, after just 3 minutes into the second period, was a killer blow to Chinnor's aspirations.

The endeavours of the Chinnor ground staff, aided by both the Chairman and Secretary ensured that the ground passed the referee's inspection. With Darren Oxley side-lined due to hamstring problems, Ed Orchard moved into the centre with Ben Hewitt resuming at full-back. James Hewitt, recently restored to the Chinnor ranks, came in on the bench along with Ed Rixon who has been sidelined with a knee injury.

Cinderford opened the scoring in the 20th minute when hooker Nigel Matthews went over from a rolling maul. This was the result of sustained Cinderford pressure which Chinnor had stoutly defended for a prolonged period. Chinnor replied when Eric Brown kicked downfield. Copsey, Cinderford's fullback was penalised for not releasing the ball and Ben Hewitt stepped up to kick a well judged penalty. James Hewitt was soon into the action when Martyn O'Mahoney had to leave the field with a head injury. With Anthony Pyers yellow carded for not releasing the ball, somewhat harsh in that the decision lacked consistency in view of the Cinderford player remaining on the park some minutes earlier from an identical offence, Cinderford scored their second try when they broke from the middle of the field. A well judged final pass saw Lloyd Stapleton score in the corner. With JP Emmelman given a yellow card for allegedly collapsing a rolling maul on the half-time whistle, Chinnor were trailing by both points and players at the break.

With Douglas scoring just after the break, Chinnor went onto the offensive. They were camped on the Cinderford line for a prolonged period but could not take advantage of this pressure. Cinderford defended extremely well to keep Chinnor at bay. Eventually they broke the deadlock to score another try , initially set up via a rolling maul and finished by a darting run from scrum half and captain Steven Lynn. With Tristan Roberts converting both second half tries it was game set and match to Cinderford who gave Chinnor a lesson in how to turn pressure into points.
