U16 win title in style

Chinnor clinch U 16’s title in style

Chinnor U16s secured the Oxfordshire RFU League Division 1 title after defeating Banbury 30 points to 8 at Kingsey Road on Sunday.

In damp, difficult conditions the Chinnor pack took immediate control when Joe Picket grounded the ball for a try after a 30 metre driving maul. Despite having the majority of possession Chinnor conceded too many penalties and Banbury capitalised on one of these errors to score three points.

As the match progressed the Chinnor pack began to take control and to exhibit much more discipline. This, combined with tenacious pressure from the backs, allowed Tom Curry to intercept a Banbury pass and to score under the posts. Ryan Binnee converted.

Banbury retaliated immediately when they span the ball wide and the winger dived across the line for a try in the corner. However, their jubilation was short lived as a penalty in front of the posts allowed Binnee to extend Chinnor’s lead.

It was one way traffic for the last 20 minutes of the game. A succession of quick, recycled ball opened up the blind side where Mark Gould took full advantage and sprinted 40 metres for a fine solo try. Another blind side break by scrum half Gould then set up a second try for Tom Curry and a superlative Chinnor performance was rounded off when Jordan Wood crashed over for the final score of the match.

Chinnor has dominated the league this season and are unassailable with one more game to play. They have scored 189 points in seven games whilst only conceding 27. Captain, Tom Curry, said, “It would have been impossible to win the title without a strong squad of players and an exceptional team ethic” sentiments echoed by coaches Rob Johnson and David Purchase.
