Chinnor started the game into a
substantial diagonal wind, which Oxford used to good effect.
Unfortunately though, it was not just the wind and a well drilled
Oxford side that undermined Chinnor's performance, it was also the
effects of the night before.
Oxford worked hard and were
rewarded with a try in the corner, which they failed to convert.
5-0.
A short while later, Chinnor
were awarded a penalty, twenty metres out and virtually in front.
Fullback Ben Hewitt stepped up to launch the ball right where it
belonged – through the posts to make it 5-3.
Oxford then stood on the gas and
after a period of concerted effort, broke through in the corner for
another unconverted try and an extended lead. 10-3.
There was then a period of
interplay, which culminated in a five metre scrum being awarded to
Chinnor following some dominant play by the Chinnor pack. Scrum-half
Jason Garod inserted the pill into the scrum and when Matt Grellier
hooked it back, Garod gathered and zipped around over the try line
to make it 10-8. Ben Hewitt stepped up and bisected the uprights to
put Chinnor on level terms. It was game on then at 10-10.
Before the referee's whistle
gave the players some respite, Oxford got their noses in front with
another unconverted try. Having gone 15-10 up and retained that
cushion going in to half-time.
During the break, the Chinnor
coaching staff made some tactical switches, which did result in
Chinnor raising their game. Oxford though, defended resolutely,
despite Chinnor having the ascendancy in the lineouts and scrums.
The scoreboard remained static and Chinnor were left to reflect on
the night before. Because the same effort and determination in
conjunction with a clear head and fresh body would have secured
valuable league points.
