Beaconsfield (Away)

Beaconsfield Colts 10 vs. Chinnor Colts 19
Sunday 13th November 2005

Bright sunshine and an intermittent strong breeze provided the backcloth to this winner take all double-header.

The victors would walk away with a place in the 3rd Round of the National Colts Knockout Cup and also, points from a win in the Berks, Bucks and Oxon League.

Chinnor held territorial advantage from the kick-off and spent most of the first quarter camped inside the Beaconsfield twenty-two. Their sole return for this pressure was three penalties, which yielded no points.

Enter Morgan Thompson. Once again the Chinnor forwards rucked over and the quick witted Thompson took the solo option. He sniped through the cover from twenty metres out to go over to the right of the posts. Ollie Heath made the conversion look easier than it was to make 0-7.

Mark Rumble then produced a tremendous bullocking run, which took him to within touching distance of the try-line. The referee adjudged a double movement from behind and some distance away. The smart money was on a bad call.

Almost instantly, Beaconsfield got themselves over in the corner from five metres. The conversion attempt did not get near. 5-7.

The intensive pace continued until the break.

It was more of the same, come the second half, as Beaconsfield addressed their territorial deficiency. The next points however, came from a superb running line from winger Tim Hughes. Chinnor won a scrum out near the right hand touchline and as the ball came back down the line, Hughes came in off his wing and hit the line at an adverse angle with pace. Once he had broken the line he still had work to do and his magical footwork took him past at least two more players, to go in under the posts. Ollie Heath sealed maximum points.

Beaconsfield were back within the blink of the eye. They put some pressure, took territorial advantage and converted it into a try reminiscent of their first. In the process they did benefit from a rather lengthy advantage. Faced with the conversion, the kicker found it difficult to get any elevation and so it remained 10-14.

Beaconsfield continued aggressively and seemed to still be in with a shout with ten minutes to go. Chinnor ignited though. They stepped on the gas an sent Beaconsfield reeling backwards with a series of pickup and drives. After five or six, Chinnor found themselves controlling a ruck near the touchline and virtually on the Beaconsfield try-line. Morgan Thompson came in and picked up the ball before putting out a delicate short pass towards the touchline inviting a response from his team mates. The onrushing Ollie Heath picked the ball up off his shoelaces, before producing a classic dive over the line. 10-19.

Heath took the kick himself, but a combination of tired legs, distance, angle and shoddy footing conspired to result in a missed kick.

A short while later, the referee blew his whistle for the last time.
