Near perfect conditions at
Kingsey Road, provided a superb backcloth for this spirited Berks,
Bucks and Oxon league encounter.
Five minutes into the game,
Chinnor pressed fort the Chilts line out right and set it up for
their wide boys. The ball was arrowed down the backs for winger
Brendan Davis to capitalise on a simple chance to score in the left
hand corner. Morgan Thompson was unsuccessful with the conversion
attempt. 5-0.
A short while later, Amersham
responded with a converted try to take the lead 5-7.
Chinnor then made the most of
their superior possession, when they performed a re-enactment of
their first try. This time however, the beneficiary was the other
winger, Jamie Hiscock, who placed the ball purposefully down to make
it 10-7. Once more, Morgan Thompson had to admit defeat with his
conversion attempt. The score then remained 10-7 until the break.
In the second period, Chinnor
maintained forward momentum to such an extent that Amersham barely
got out of their own half with the ball in hand.
After laying siege to the Chils
line with a combination of direct running and deft kicking, Chinnor
found themselves being awarded a penalty five metres out. A short
tap by Ollie Heath preceded some sharp robust interplay and prop
Will Batting drove over from his customary five metres out to make
it 15-7. It then proved third time lucky for Morgan Thompson, when
his skilful kick bisected the posts to add the extras and take his
team out to 17-7.
Chinnor then worked themselves
into several more favourable wide positions, but were let down by
handling lapses. Eventually though, their cohesive and committed
play received its reward. A series of drives close to the Chilts
line allowed replacement prop Dan Quadrado to drive over out near
the touchline to make it 22-7. Morgan Thompson then produced a
fantastic conversion kick to nail on the Amersham coffin lid good
and proper.
With eight minutes left on the
clock, the Chinnor coaching team rang the changes and they were not
disappointed with the outcome. Every player who came on, attained
the same high standards reached by his predecessor. It was an
excellent all round team performance. Probably, the best of the
season so far.
