The sun was out, but there was a chill in the air, as
this BBO phase two, league clash was played on an extremely tacky
surface at Weedon Lane.
Chinnor knew before match day, that they would be
without several key players and that they would only be able to
muster a limited number of players into the bargain.
At the end of the game, it was apparent that the only
difference between the two teams was home advantage. This
observation was made on the basis that Chinnor had beaten Chilts at
Kingsey Road by a similar margin, in the first phase of the
competition.
On the day in question, Chinnor forwards fronted up
and asserted pressure. Meanwhile, the backline was firing blanks. It
has to be said though, that there was evidence of lack lustre
throughout the entire team, with a few too many missed tackles.
Reflection would have raised questions about the effects of beer and
sleep deprivation.
Chinnor had taken the lead early on with an awesome
long range penalty kick by Ben Hewitt, which cleared the crossbar
with a few metres to spare. Afterwards though, cohesion completely
deserted Chinnor and Chilts commitment and graft was rewarded with
ten points by halftime, to realise a 10-3 lead.
Chilts also won the second half 10-3, when Chinnor
gave a better account of themselves with Hewitt again notching a
penalty. Although, their performance was improved, with Chilts
resolutely defending their own try line for long periods, Chinnor
were never going to get back into the game in a meaningful way.
The score ended 20-6 as Chinnor were left to reflect.
The Chinnor coach Rob Hill designated Sam Blewitt as
his Man of the Match.
The next Colts fixture sees Chinnor entertaining
Maidenhead on 5th February.
