1st XV

End of Season 2005 -6 Review
or should that be
Start of Season 2006-7

As one season ends so my thoughts turn to next year and the excitement of the challenges which lay ahead. I went to watch Reading play Cambridge for the last game of the season, top verses bottom in National 3. I did not see anything which frightened me – winning National 3 does not appear to be rocket science. The Cambridge boys were bigger and more physical than we are used to and they were strong enough to break half a tackle, stay on their feet and off load the ball with control. They were allowed to work hard for the ball on the floor and when they did turn Reading over they generally scored.

We will concentrate on all these aspects in pre-season which starts on Tuesday July 4th with a ball. If players arrive at that first training session without having spent the summer in the gym and without having built up their cardio-vascular fitness then it is too late. For any player expecting to play in National 3 next year the season starts now. It is an individual thing!

Several of our team are moving on and I have started the process of replacing them. Recruiting players is not an exact science and although we will make firm commitments to some known, talented individuals many will attend pre-season as trialists both from this country and abroad. They will be offered accommodation with a host family. So I need club members whether Mini, Junior or Senior to offer their services as families. All you need to do is provide a single room in your home and breakfast and an evening meal. In return you will be paid £10 a day and you will have the company of a real live player – you never know they could be a future contact for a free holiday or World cup tickets.

This year the Senior players have achieved so much. We finished league Winners at 1st XV, 2nd XV and 3rd XV the Academy won the County Cup with over 20 Academy players having played Senior rugby. The message to all young players within a 30 mile radius of Chinnor must be obvious. I will be writing to rugby masters from all the rugby playing schools in that radius inviting their best players to join the Senior Squad for pre-season training. It goes without saying that if you know a good player, then I also need to know who they are. We will have a playing relationship with Henley Hawks and London Wasps next year to provide a pathway for our young talent. The details have yet to be finalised but we hope to provide the opportunities we provided to David Seymour.

We are a Traditional Rugby Club, we are not a franchised 1st XV – if that ever changes I will leave and start again. As coach I got tremendous pleasure from the 3rd XV winning and will do all I can to ensure they win the league again next year. As they have been promoted to the 2nd XV league the 2nd XV have to move out and they will be playing in the London Canterbury Leagues against other National League opposition. In order to achieve the same level of success they need help with administration, their own travelling coach and physiotherapist. We will put these in place for next season. Any volunteers?

We have been very successful this year but we now move on to bigger and better things. The challenges start again and I for one am up for them. I know the team I lead – not the playing team the important people are ready to start now. As for the players they have 3 months and 3 weeks before our first pre-season game in mid august not to mention the County Championship and the small matter of a tour to Dubai.

Thank-you to everyone for your contribution this year, whatever you did it made a difference so you can justifiably claim some credit for our club’s unprecedented success.
