Thatcham U17's 0 vs. Chinnor U17's 19
Sunday 26th September 2004

This match marked the inaugural visit of Chinnor to Henwick Worthy Sports Field. The occasion was a league encounter, which marked the second round of Berks, Bucks and Oxon. Under 17 league.

Chinnor fielded an untried formation, which featured Marcus Hare at full back, Luke Goddard as flanker and Ross Gehnich at centre. Each of those players assuming those positions for the first time. Additionally, Ben Lee was appearing for the first time this season at lock and Ben Peddie completed his first full match ever.

Thatcham won the toss and elected to play with the wind on this warm sunny day. The game commenced with Thatcham playing with spirit and Chinnor spluttering as they struggled to find a rhythm. Their play featured a lack of alertness, not to mention a variety of basic individual errors and indecision, until suddenly, they sparked into life. Mark Rumble burst forth through the first line of defence, before being stopped. As he was taken to the ground he turned and popped the ball up to Alec Campbell, who floated a pass over a defender for Ben Hewitt to touch the ball down by the posts. Ollie Heath caressed the ball through the uprights to make it 7-0 Chinnor.

After the score, Chinnor resumed as they had begun, struggling to establish any continuity. Following a sustained period of this, Chinnor ignited once more. This time, an excellent sweeping move along the three-quarters, culminated in Brendan Davis going over in the corner. Kicking into the wind, Ollie Heath within a hairs breadth of bisecting the posts from the touchline. 12-0 Chinnor it remained until halftime.

During the second half, Chinnor showed signs of thawing out, as for a variety of frustrating reasons, opportunities went begging. Suddenly, they went into overdrive with a flowing move across the pitch, following a scrum. It culminated in inside centre Ben Hewitt holding up a delightful pass for his makeshift centre partner, Ross Gehnich, to take the crash ball, before smashing his way through four determined tacklers to reach the corner of the try area and a further three or four to touch down under the posts for Ollie Heath to ensure maximum points. Ultimately, the 19-0 score line was the margin of victory for Chinnor.

Both teams battled hard and both teams would have benefited from a replacement or two.
