Milton Keynes U17's 7 vs. Chinnor U17's 23
Sunday 17th October 2004
Chinnor’s third Oxon, Berks and
Bucks league match of the season took them up to Milton Keynes on this
dreary Sunday. Milton Keynes began with the wind at their backs.
Chinnor began at the brightest, with
Dean Spinks dominant in the lineout and Matt Grellier taking virtually
all the ball put into the scrum. They eventually converted that pressure
into points, when from the ruck out left, Mark Rumble sucked the
opposition in before delivering a perfectly timed pass out to Brendon
Davis, who fed Tim Hughes for him to give a dancing exhibition. Having
weaved his way through the opposition, Hughes passed to Ben Hewitt, who
put Marcus Hare into the corner. Ollie Heath could not defeat the wind
and acute angle, so the score remained 0-5.
A short time later, Chinnor were
awarded a penalty in front of the posts and skipper Ross Gehnich,
elected to invite Ollie Heath to take the points. He duly obliged to
make it 0-8. The keenly contested half ended with the scoreboard
static..
MK came out invigorated for the
second half, as Chinnor seemingly appeared to think that the game was
all but won. Chinnor paid the price for this state of mind as MK got
over under the posts to capitalise on series of five metre penalties.
The conversion was a mere formality as the score moved to 7-8.
The score re-ignited Chinnor. They
were awarded a five metre penalty them selves and from the quick tap,
prop Will Batting crashed over in the corner. Ollie Heath shaved the
posts from the conversion attempt. 7-13.
A short while later, Chinnor
released their backs and Ben Hewitt stepped through the cover to make it
7-18 under the posts. Ollie Heath did not require an invitation to make
it 7-20.
As Chinnor turned the screw, Hewitt
received the ball centre-field, took aim and dropped a goal from fifteen
metres to close the match out at 7-23.
Perhaps the score line did not
reflect the level of the MK performance, but to a man Chinnor performed
well and earned their victory.
