Colts vs. Oxford

Chinnor Colts 6 vs. Oxford Colts 10
Sunday 3rd October 2004

Chinnor started brightly and put Oxford under pressure from the kick-off. Two good packs set to battling for the ball and position, trying to get the upper hand. However each was able to hold their own and good service to the backs became the first issue of the match.

After five minutes Chinnor were awarded a penalty just inside their half and silly behaviour from the retreating Oxford players moved the penalty 10yards forward and into kicking distance. Adam White calmly took the points and Chinnor were 3-0 ahead.

The referee's continual involvement throughout the game, whilst almost always correct, did not allow the game to flow and after 10 minutes Oxford were able to level the score with a penalty.

With the scores level at half time and the Kingsey wind in their favour, Chinnor started well again in the second half. Before long the whistle was again calling for the Chinnor kicking tee and the yellow card was shown to the Oxford number 19.

Chinnor, through Adam White took the three points, which put them into the lead 6-3. With the opportunity of the extra man, things were looking good. Sadly the clear ball from the scrum, rucks and mauls of the first half dried up somewhat and when the ball did come out clean, it did not move sharply down the line. The wind continued to blow down the field but without the ball. No advantage could be won from the extra man and Oxford, having survived the loss, came back with increased pressure and power.

A drive towards the Chinnor line was stopped some 15 yards out but then two sets of Chinnor hoops dived over like the start of a synchronised swimming race, the referee's arm indicated advantage, but the whistle on this occasion did not blow as the Oxford players reacted first and ghosted over the line for a try and subsequent conversion. With the score 6-10, minutes left and being a player down the pack drove and Dan Isaac effortlessly kicked the ball on the wind to the corner. A knock- on gave Chinnor a scrum in the corner and coach Richard John played the last throw of the dice, taking off Dan Cuadrado who had had an excellent game and sending on Will Batting for one last power drive for the line, but to no avail and Oxford had won an excellent match.
