It took
Chinnor to score their 6th try to make this game safe. They
frittered away a 10 point advantage mid-way through the second
period, when Penryn struck back with two tries of their own in
within a 5 minute period, and had to dig deep into their reserves to
achieve the result they so sorely needed. Both sides played some
attractive rugby in the second half which proved to be a nail biter.
Chinnor were
not helped in the final quarter as, ace goal kicker James Cathcart
sustained a groin injury when going over for his first half try and
was unable to kick for goal.
Chinnor scored
in the 1st. minute of the game when Cathcart hoisted a high up and
under which full back Nick Brown fumbled allowing Darren Oxley to
win the race for the touchdown. Cathcart adding the conversion. They
should have increased this minutes later but it took a deliberate
knock on to thwart them. Surprisingly the offender was not carded as
this prevented a certain try. Cathcart missed with the resultant
kick. Penryn struck back via the boot of captain Dave Pascoe who
unerringly kicked 3 penalty goals to put the visitors in front.
With Hutchins
in the sin bin for an offence at the line-out Chinnor scored their
second try when Cathcart broke from 22 metres to score and add the
conversion. A try by Mann with Pascoe adding the extra points, when
Winpenny found himself in the sin bin for a technical offence, put
Penryn in the ascendancy at the half way mark.
Chinnor were
first to strike in the second half when after some patient build up
Darren Oxley went over in the corner. A try by full back Richard
Major, which he converted, after the home side had created the
overlap gave Chinnor a ten point cushion. Chinnor then over
elaborated, and instead of consolidating threw out a loose pass when
they were on the attack, gave possession to Penryn who worked the
ball skilfully to put full back Brown in for a try. With scrum half
Pascoe scampering over, after a fine pick-up and feed from No.8 Ben
Short, and converting both tries, Penryn were now in the lead.
Sam McIvor
then got into the act when he took a one handed catch from a half
break by Cameron Shaw to score. With Chinnor failing with two
penalty goals from in front of the posts it took a final try by
Shaw, who cut through the Penryn defence, to touch down near the
posts to settle the nerves. A final onslaught by Penryn was safely
kept at bay by the Chinnor defence.
