Chinnor 1st XV 36
vs. Keynsham 1st XV 18
Saturday 23rd April 2005
South-West Division One
Fine victory places Chinnor at highest SW
1 league position ever!
Chinnor dug deep into their playing strength, but still comfortably
beat Keynsham 36-18 at Kingsey Road to clinch fourth place in the table.
With Zane Winslade back in his native New Zealand, Craig Burrows
hospitalised, Mike Cook injured, Alan Cawston unavailable and Joe
Winpenny just fit enough to do bench duty, Chinnor were forced to make
five changes from their Oxfordshire Cup final line-up.
They took the lead, when the ubiquitous Cameron Shaw, playing his
last game for the club, touched down under the posts, for James Cathcart
to convert.
With Chad Ward capitalising on a bout of passing more akin to
basketball than rugby, Chinnor found themselves 12 points up after 20
minutes.
Two penalties from Paul Edson, plus a try from their influential No 8
Michael Johnson, allowed Keynsham to narrow the deficit to one point at
half-time.
With the breeze at their backs, Chinnor used Cathcart's big kicks to
gain ground in the second half, and they they ran in four tries in the
last quarter.
The tries were all scored by their wingers. The first came from Ward,
while Charlie Oyebade grabbed a brace before Richard Grimsdell, coming
on for Ward, scored under the posts.
With Cathcart converting two of thems, Chinnor were home and dry,
despite a try for the visitors from Thompson in the final seconds.
