Chinnor extended their unbeaten run to four games when they took the
spoils against a stubborn Keynsham on Saturday.
Keynsham made them fight all the way and it was only two tries in
the latter stages that made the game safe for the Oxfordshire side.
Chinnor had never won at the Crown Fields so even though Keynsham
were pointless going into this game there was the lingering thought
that they were due a result and this could represent a potential "
banana skin" situation for Chinnor.
In heavy ground conditions Chinnor opened the scoring with a
Cathcart penalty. Chinnor always looked dangerous when they moved
the ball wide but these opportunities were restricted as they were
unable to establish a solid platform up front. Richard Major then
scored wide out after Darren Oxley had broken through the centre to
create an overlap. Another penalty by Cathcart when Keynsham were
caught offside in front of their posts saw Chinnor with an interval
lead of 13 points.
Keynsham took the game to Chinnor after the interval and it came as
no surprise when after a series of forays into Chinnor
territory, and showing patience allayed with ball retention, David
Gray their inside centre was put over . With Edson adding the simple
conversion it was now game on. It was even more on when Edson kicked
a penalty to put the home side just three points adrift with 20
minutes remaining. This spurred Chinnor to finally get their act
together and decide to get their hands on the ball.
Tries by James Hewitt and Richard Grimsdell, on his debut, both
following flowing three-quarter movements put the game safe for
Chinnor. This was an error ridden performance by Chinnor. Once again
Darren Oxley played with composure and was a constant threat along
with his co-centre Cameron Shaw. Zane Winslade was easily the pick
of the forwards as he ran at the Keynsham defence most of the
afternoon.
Chinnor will need to improve substantially for their encounter with
a confident Maidenhead outfit next Saturday at Kingsey Road.
