Chinnor started well , finished with a flourish but in between
provided somewhat of a lack lustre performance. Gloucester Old Boys
played to their strength which was very much forward oriented. They
denied Chinnor possession by virtue of strong scrummaging and an
accurate line-out. Consequently Chinnor could not get their hands on
the ball as the Old Boys kept the game tight with driving mauls.
This was frustrating for the home side as they were itching to get
their threes into the game as often as possible.
Chinnor opened the scoring when Cathcart sliced through the Old Boys
defence to score a fine individual try under the posts and add the
conversion. The old Boys replied with a well struck penalty by Matt
Sherrett after their first incursion into Chinnor territory.
Cathcart replied minutes later with a penalty before Cameron Shaw
charged down an attempted clearance kick to follow up and touch down
near the corner flag. Chinnor then went into their shell allowing
the Old Boys to take the game to them and it was no surprise that
after a succession of rolling mauls, second row forward Greenwood
went over the line to give a half time shoreline of 15pts to 8 in
Chinnor's favour.
The Old Boys started the second half by once again taking the game
to Chinnor via their forwards and were rewarded early on with a
Sherrett drop goal. This was a wake-up call for the home side who
started to gain some possession to give to their three quarters. Two
penalties from Cathcart put them on their way before Cameron Shaw
got his second try after the strong running Sam McIvor put him over
in the corner. A fine touchline conversion by Cathcart completed the
scoring. It was good to see James Hewitt looking the part after his
long lay off and once again Matt Hutchinson put in a sterling
performance in the second row.
Second report from IATC as follows:
Chinnor took the points in this
match with James Cathcart contributing 18 points for the home side.
Cathcart gave the home side the
lead in the 7th minute with the games first try and added
the conversion to go 7-0 ahead. Matt Sherratt pulled three points
back with a penalty goal three minutes later for the Old Boys but
four minutes later Cathcart kicked three points for the home side.
In the 19th minute the home side got a second try through
centre Cameron Shaw but this time Cathcart could not find the
target. A minute later and GOB were over the home try line through
flanker James Greenwood in the final score of the first half.
In the second half the visitors
were first to score with Sherratt dropping a goal to get them back
to within four points of Chinnor.
Cathcart then kicked a couple of penalty goals to
take the home side 21-11 clear before Shaw wrapped up the win with a
second try and Cathcart converted.
