Clevedon (Away)

Clevedon 1st XV 29 vs. Chinnor 1st XV 9
Saturday 2nd October
South West Division One

It’s always a difficult task to travel to the West Country and come away with the spoils, but when you gift the opposition 3 tries it becomes mission impossible. Chinnor did this in the first half when they allowed Clevedon to disrupt their put-in on two occasions to score twice from almost identical positions. The irony being that Chinnor looked solid on their feed, indeed on several occasions turning the opposition through 90 degrees.

Clevedon opened their account from a scrum some 20 metres from the Chinnor line when scrum-half Vails was allowed to crawl all over Danny Burns and for Clevedon to secure the resultant loose ball allowing Pearce to drive over for a try. This was naive by Chinnor in that they allowed Vials to get in the channel between their No.6 and No.8. O'Rourke added the conversion. With Chinnor attacking, Cathcart put in a chip kick to the corner only to see it glue to the hands of Kyle Palm who ran 90 metres to score under the posts. With Chinnor giving a repeat performance of their scrummage fiasco some minutes previously, Owen Biggins picked up the loose ball to go over for another gift score. O'Rouke added the easy conversion. This was all the more frustrating as they had pounded the Clevedon line for minutes on end to no avail. In both possession count and territory Chinnor had 70% of the play. To rub salt into their wounds, Clevedon were awarded a try on the stroke of half time when Thie was awarded a try when the ball appeared to have crossed the dead ball line.

Three second half penalties from the boot of Cathcart gave faint hope of revival but a penalty by O'Rourke towards the end made the score line quite unflattering from a Chinnor perspective. They must learn from their mistakes as next week they entertain unbeaten Cinderford who will penalise any weaknesses.
