Chinnor 1st XV 16 vs. Cinderford 1st XV 41
Saturday 9th October South West Division One
With 5 minutes
of full-time remaining Chinnor were trailing by just 5 points and
holding on with the faint possibility of sneaking a result. However
this hope was completely snuffed out when Cinderford went in for
three tries in the closing stages.
Chinnor who won
the toss and elected to play with the wind were three points down
after 4 minutes when Trigs kicked an easy penalty after the Chinnor
threes were caught off-side in front of the posts. James
Cathcart levelled the scores 15 minutes later with a penalty. With a
Goatey try for Cinderford following a period of sustained pressure
by the Forest of Dean side and a further penalty by Trigs, it seemed
that Chinnor were wasting their wind advantage. However just before
half-time a Cathcart penalty and a try from Chad Ward who picked up
a wayward Cinderford pass to race 60 metres and score near the posts
gave Chinnor an interval lead of 13pts to 11.
Cinderford began
the second period by attacking the Chinnor line right from the
outset A try by Samoan Ronnie Patea and converted by Trigs soon put
them ahead . It was now Chinnor defence against a well drilled
Cinderford attack with their fly-half Tupe Fanolua starting to call
the shots. Another Trigs penalty appeared to spur the home-side and
a Cathcart penalty was scant reward for Chinnor's best period of the
game. With the referee playing 8 minutes of injury time Cinderford
put paid to any hopes that Chinnor had by running in tries at a
tired defence, from Goatey, Fanolua, and Ward with Trigs kicking two
conversions.
This was a
spirited performance by the young Chinnor side against a well
organised and skilful Cinderford outfit. Darren Oxley had another
sound game in the centre with Matt Hutchins, Zane Winslade and Mike
Cook the pick of the forwards.
