Chinnor were a
metre away from snatching a win in the closing seconds of the game
when Sam McIvor was hauled down just short of the line, but Chinnor
had to be satisfied with sharing the spoils in this closely fought
encounter at the Princes Stadium. In almost perfect conditions
Cheltenham started the game at a fearsome pace taking the lead early
on with a penalty by David Parker when Chinnor were adjudged
off-side. A Cathcart penalty levelled the scores, before Turner went
over after Cheltenham had created an overlap from a prolonged period
of pressure, Parker adding the conversion. Chinnor drew level when
their threes broke free in the middle of the park to give Darren
Oxley a run for the corner. With James Cathcart adding the
conversion with a fine kick from the touchline Chinnor were once
again on terms. Two more penalties from the boot of David Parker
gave Cheltenham an interval lead of 16pts to 10.
With the wind
at their backs Chinnor dominated the opening phases after the
restart and it came as no surprise when, following a crisp handling
movement, James Major touched down in the corner. A lapse of
concentration straight from the kick-off saw Chinnor pay the penalty
when Stuart Crabb, Cheltenham's big second row, rumble over the line
to score near the posts. This opened up an eight point gap but
another try by Darren Oxley, to give him a brace shortened the gap.
With a penalty from Cathcart putting the scores level, all was to
play for.
The referee
then adjudged Chinnor off-side in front of the posts and Whitney
kicked a wobbly penalty to put the home side back in front. With a
Cheltenham player handling the ball in a ruck, Cathcart evened the
scores with a well struck 40 metre effort. It was now desperate
Cheltenham defence to keep Chinnor at bay culminating in a last
ditch tackle to thwart what could have been a well deserved away
victory.
Second report from
IATC reports as follows:
Cheltenham 26 (Try: Turner, Williams.
Cons: Parker 2. Pens: Parker 4.)
Chinnor 26 (Tries: Oxley 2, Major. Con:
Cathcart. Pens: Cathcart 3.)
These two sides fought out a
draw which was enough for Cheltenham to move up into second place in
the South West One league table.
Cheltenham after taking the lead
with a David Parker penalty early on were never behind but could
never quite pull far enough away from Chinnor who kept pegging them
back.
James Cathcart levelled a few
minutes later before the home side went ahead with the games first
try on 11 minutes from centre Ian Turner and Parker converted.
Chinnor were level six minute later with centre Darren Oxley
crossing the home line and Cathcart adding the extras. By half time
Cheltenham were 16-10 ahead with Parker kicking a couple of penalty
goals.
Full back Richard Major got the visitors back within
a point early in the second half with an unconverted try. Soon after
Cheltenham got a second try through second row Kristian Williams and
with Parker again on target the home side were 23-15 ahead. Oxley
got a second try for Chinnor to get them back within three and
Cathcart after missing the conversion levelled it at 23 all with a
penalty goal. Late on replacement Mark Whitney gave the home side a
three point advantage again but Cathcart got the visitors a point
with his third penalty goal
